Checking on the babies yesterday afternoon/ night after they got their first taste of crazy Montana June storms. We didn't get any hail but everywhere around us got up to half inch hailstones. Carter County, the very south east corner of Montana, apparently had 3 inch hailstones 😳 After what happened last year, severe storms give us a bit of anxiety. We did get some strong winds and decent down pour, maybe a tenth to quarter inch so thankful for that. The new chicken tractor and babies are bone dry so none of the wind driven rain found its way in. Winds were only 40 to 50 mph so nothing too crazy. Meanwhile western Montana is getting snow which makes me jealous 😂

Put the chicken tractor in partial storm mode (vents are still open). The weather service put out a statement that there is a 30% chance of severe storms this afternoon/evening. Worst case scenario being golf ball sized hail, 65 mph+ winds, and heavy rain so preparing now. There was a MASSIVE spider behind one of the wind breaks when I slid it down. The babies were chasing it for a while until one of them finally ate it 😂

More and more of the babies are getting the courage to explore outside the coop even with all the rain we got this past weekend. We received just under an inch of rain and there is a chance of more Thursday.

It'll be a week tonight that the babies have been outside! They still haven't really left the chicken tractor. I've been enticing them with bits of grass and weeds. We've been way hotter than normal (low to mid 90s) but they aren't showing too much heat stress. Keeping our fingers crossed this inch plus of rain predicted for this weekend happens. We need it.

Zipper is 29 today! She's still her spicy red mare self even in her old age 😑 she was grumpy because I woke her up from her afternoon nap. Legend was trying to photo bomb with his nose 😂

First one done! Not happy with how the ridge cap turned out, looks like 💩, but it's water tight which is all that matters. I'll fix it sometime this winter. The babies are not in it yet because we are having a fun little wind storm and severe storm watches last night. 30-40 mph West winds with gusts up to 60 so it's being tested! It's in what I'm calling storm mode so the wind breaks are slid down and staked into the ground with all the vents closed up and the blue straps anchored two feet in the ground. The door on the other side is open so the chickens could go in and out still. If they had been in it we would have moved them back to the winter coop yesterday before this system moved in. The thing isn't even shaking from the gusts unlike our house 😂

Welp I finally came up with a name for this chicken that's been dealing with our second ever case of bumble foot (a staph infection in her foot). Gertrude The Grey. We've been on a Hobbit and Lord of the Rings binge fest so that's where the inspiration came from 🤣 She's one of my favorite chickens from July because of her varying colors of gray and she has a beard instead of waddles. She's getting an Epsom salt soak on her feet to soften the infection so it's easier to pull out (it's a hard, barb looking thing in her foot). Then she gets a nice thick gauze pad and wrap.

The first chicken tractor just needs the roof! The second one is coming along quickly since I actually wrote everything down for once 😬 We got a little rain/snow last night so it's nice and muddy. The babies will be going in the first one, they're ready to be outside!

Set up one of the portable electric netting sections along the outside of the run so the chickens can get some yummy green grass and bugs. Still about a month away from them going back out to pasture. We wait until the last frost date which is May 15th for us. We've got a lot of moisture supposedly coming this week, may turn in to a little snow. Keeping our fingers crossed it happens!
