This redraws the contiguous 48 states by what the land actually does rather than by state lines. Pasture and range is the single largest use at 654 million acres, more than a third of the total, and once you add the cropland grown to feed animals, about 41 per cent of the lower 48 revolves around livestock. The figures come from Department of Agriculture data sorted into six broad categories, being pasture and range, forest, cropland, special use such as national parks, highways, railways and military bases, urban, and everything else. The small blocks are the ones worth staring at, because golf courses, Christmas trees and rural airports all get a patch of their own.

And the summer just keeps trucking on. It's Thursday again already, so the Morris Farmers Market is open today, from 3:00-5:30pm, behind the firehouse. And under the pavilion, so if it rains, you can stay dry and under cover while you shop.

It is also corn season, and our corn vendor is taking larger orders, to be picked up at the market this afternoon. Just call (607) 244-6275 to place your order, and remember to stop by the market to pick it up this afternoon, along with some other goodies to fill your bag!

Words can’t fully express the gratitude and appreciation we feel from yesterday’s livestock auction. Our friends from our dairy farm business pulled through last night and our veterinarian bought Karen and our nutritionist and her family bought Bubba. This has been a great experience for our daughter although definitely emotional parting ways with the animals she has grown to love. Thank you again to her sponsors Parry’s Hardware in Hamilton (they were the first response to her letter and she was so happy she cried), our dear friend Paul Mastro on behalf of the Sherburne Historic Park, and a special thanks to Barry James at McDowell and Walker who provided the grain for the sheep. Thank you to all the bidders and those who showed support in any way. Much love to all the volunteers who made not only the auction great but to the Chenango County 4-H that’s been such an important part of our daughters experiences and development. The grand finale of the night was the auctioning of a maple basket we donated for our friend who was severely injured in a farm accident that brought in over $1000. We love being part of such a loving community and look forward to more opportunities to pay it forward.
