Staff Spotlight: Kristen Marcus
Kristen has been with CHAPS for over 10 years and first interviewed for the position of Barn Manager. At the interview, the board convinced her to apply for the Executive Director position and proceeded to interview her for ED.
Kristen has a background in horses, having grown up on a working cattle ranch. She has been riding since she was 5 and was "in charge" of the family horse herd at 10. She has an A.S. in Equine Science, B.S. in Animal Science (emphasis on equine nutrition and management), Masters of Ag in Animal Science and a M.S. in Ag Communications.
Kristen was first certified to teach riding in 1999 through the Certified Horseman's Association. In 2007, she acquired her English and western riding certification from the American Riding Instructors' Association (ARIA). In 2020, Kristen got certified from ARIA in Stable Management (highest level) and PATH International as an Equine Specialist in Mental Health & Learning (ESMHL). She then went on to get an Equine Facilitator Level 1 from the HERD Institute in 2022. Ever the learner, Kristen got certified for carriage driving from PATH International in 2024.
Kristen taught the Equine courses at Sheridan College from 2010 to 2014 and enjoys teaching very much. She and Gina put together the Equine Skills & Management Clinic and have taught it locally and to other centers in our region.
Kristen's passion for this industry didn't just stem from her love of horses. Her daughter was born with cerebral palsy and began riding lessons at three years old. Riding built muscles, made new pathways in the brain and helped improve focus, emotional control and fine motor skills.
Knowing, first hand, the benefit of the horse/human connection, Kristen continues to advocate, educate and invest in the equine assisted services industry. We are grateful she is here with us at CHAPS.
