Loom & Essence

Loom & Essence Loom & Essence is a fiber arts and craft business located at L&E Farm. L&E Farm raises dairy goats and sells goat milk and goat milk products.

Loom & Essence is a fiber arts and crafting studio founded in 1988. We cover the entire life cycle of fiber art, from the raising and breeding of llamas, the "harvesting" of the fiber, spinning and dying and finally to the weaving of finished goods. Loom & Essence is now a part of L&E Farm. When we moved to Oregon in 2004 we needed to setup another business for the farm. Since our registered llama

breeder ID is L&E, we decided to call it, L&E Farm and registered the business name accordingly. Here on L&E Farm we still breed some llamas for fiber production. We added Boer goats in 2005 to control the weeds and add revenue to the farm. Goats have become the primary farm business. We added a Kiko buck in 2010 and are producing a Boer/Kiko cross that's doing well for us. We added some dairy goats in late 2011 and are now focusing on growing the diary herd in size and opening a goat milk diary. We also added to the working staff of the farm in late 2010 by getting a border collie to help with herd management. A second border collie was added in 2013. Homemade soap has been added to the craft business. You might say we are redefining the essence in Loom & Essence! Now into 2015, we've decided to retire our website and put all our product information into Facebook

The 2019 Milkers and their kids

We have added a Belly Pail Milking System by Hoegger to speed up the milking process and make the job a little easier on ourselves. The system is designed to simulate the way goat kids nurse from under the doe. The hoses you see going to the vacuum pump are air hoses and do not transport the milk. Milk is drawn directly into the stainless steel pail making for a very clean process. We have used the system for 2 weeks now and did not have to make any modifications to our milking stand or milking area. Once the goats are milked, we take the pail back to the house, filter the milk directly into half gallon jars and then put them into an ice water bath to quick chill. The pail is then washed and sanitized.

Morning milking was almost 2 full gallons today. All our milkers are still feeding their kids during the day and we've still got a couple new milkers who haven't been on the milk stand yet! Milk is available for new clients as well as walk-in customers.

The 2018 kidding is completed and the first 4 new milkers are producing 3 half gallons every morning while still feeding their kids during the day!

We have plenty of milk for new clients as well as walk-in customers. And if you've never had raw goat milk and want to give it a try, we have a special running from now until the end of the month. Just pay a $1 refundable bottle deposit and take home a quart of goat milk.

Along with the free quart trial offering, we sell goat milk by the half gallon for $5 plus a $1 bottle deposit. If you sign up as a client for scheduled weekly pickup, we don't charge the bottle deposit.

We also have frozen milk available for $3 per half gallon. The milk is frozen flat in a heavy-duty 1 gallon freezer bag and kept in an extra cold freezer at 0 degrees or below. Frozen is a great option for animals as well as cheese. We use froze for soap making as well.

The 2018 kidding is almost over. We've reached the point where we start separating the kids that are 30 days old from their moms at night and milk the does in the morning. Meadow and Dawn are now contributing to the milk supply along with the winter milkers. So we are ready to start taking on more milk clients and we will be adding more does weekly as they get trained.
