Blue and Sow are officially parents! 🐷❤️🐷
This is the first litter of piglets from our new herd sire, Blue, and this first-time mama, Sow is doing a wonderful job. Those of you who attended A Country Affair may remember her from the first pen at the hog barn. Her sister is due to farrow any day now!
If you listen closely, you’ll hear mom grunting to her piglets. This is how she lets them know milk is available and it’s time to eat. Baby pigs are born with their eyes open, can walk within minutes, and quickly make their way to nurse.
One of the most fascinating things about piglets is that within the first 48 hours, each piglet claims its own teat and will continue using that same spot until weaning. Since some teats produce more milk than others, a pecking order forms early!
A Sow’s ability to raise piglets depends largely on how many productive teats she has, and this mama is off to a great start. 🐖
