More rain here today......sigh

Darla says she’s had enough rain for the day or for the next few days 😂

She’s getting her bath in today while she looks over the new baby calves. She is ultimately a calf babysitter and keeps everyone safe from predators. Thanks Darla for looking over the herd. Hopefully she’s enjoying some green grass while she is on patrol today.

The word SUSTAINABILITY means so many different things to so many different people.

To US it means:
Taking care of the LAND our livestock use and need everyday
Taking care of the ANIMALS to keep them healthy and happy
And
Taking care of PEOPLE by providing them a safe and nutritious form of protein that their bodies need.

Sustainability isn’t just a word to us, it’s our passion and way of life!

To the GMO farmer – Gone are the days of the dust bowl. Isn't it great how much technology has advanced which has helped you produce more food with less resources and be better stewards of the land. Thank you for being a GMO farmer.

To the organic farmer - Way to go! It’s so awesome you’re part of a niche that meets a growing demand, promotes healthy soil and natural resources and provides more choice for moms like me. Thank you for being an organic farmer.

To the livestock farmer – Caring for your animals is a 365-day-a-year job. Your hard work is rarely celebrated, but without it my cheeseburger would just be a bun. Thank you for being a livestock farmer.

To the retired farmer - What a ride! You've gone through some of the best and hardest times in agriculture and you've built such a great legacy. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and for being a farmer.

To the young farmer – Cheers to you for following your passion! I know the stakes are high with lots of pressure and a huge learning curve. You've got this. Thank you for choosing this path and for being a farmer.

To the farm families – You’re running in a million different directions with kids, activities, and farm chores. The days are long and the busy season even longer but isn’t it wonderful to watch the kids grow up on the farm and learn such important, valuable lessons? Thank you for continuing a tradition woven into the fabric of our country.

To the vet – You play such a critical role on the farm team with lots of highs and lows. It must be so rewarding to diagnose, treat, and help animals but you endure so much loss as well. Thank you for caring for our animals and being a vet.

To the truck driver – You make things happen. You fight traffic and work long days, weekends and holidays for us to have access to food, clothing and gas, all while being away from your family for days and even weeks. Thank you for making my sons’ day and honking when we passed you and for being a truck driver.

To the scientist - You’re creating the most useful technology to avoid issues today that not only helps to enrich but saves lives as well. Thank you for exploring and trying new things and for being a scientist.

To the mom and dad who do the grocery shopping (and so much more!) –Kudos! You deserve some wine tonight. Shopping with a cart full of kids and making decisions about what to buy at the grocery store can be tricky at times. Thank you for asking questions to learn more about what you’re putting on the table. When you buy food, you’re supporting a vet, a truck driver, a scientist and so much more. You’re also supporting a farm family like mine. Thank you.

I’m sure many of you have noticed that Mother Nature is out of control and that this rain just won’t STOP.

Due to circumstances beyond our control the creek has risen to unbelievable heights and has now flooded the pasture. What once was covered in green lush grass now looks like this.

I’m always amazed at the intelligence that cattle have even during the most trying times. They truly are resilient animals and have moved to higher ground to remain safe.

Thankfully our spring pairs are relaxing on hills and our fall cows have also found their way to higher ground on their end of the pasture.

As a farmer so many elements are out of our control but we continue on each day and do the best we can with what life gives us.

Please pray for dryer, warmer weather.
I know we all could use a break.

In the meantime I’m heading out to get some waders so I can keep up with this water and try to remain dry ☔️💦

May is BEEF MONTH in Illinois so I’m excited to celebrate and share all the amazing things we love about the cattle we raise and the amazing meat they produce.

We love being a part of the Illinois Farm Families program and enjoy any chance we have to share our farm story with others.

Calving requires a lot of work and a lot of sleepless nights, but there is nothing more special than witnessing the miracle of birth.
