đź’ˇTuesday Tip from RSG: Warming Up Newborn Lambs & Kids in Cold Weather

❄Cold snaps during lambing and kidding season can be tough on newborns—but quick action can make all the difference. Here’s how to safely and effectively warm up chilled babies:

🌡️ 1. Check Temperature First
If a lamb or kid feels cold, take a re**al temperature.

Normal: 101–103°F

Mildly chilled: 98–100°F

Severely chilled: below 98°F (requires immediate, intensive intervention)

🔥 2. Bring Them Inside & Dry Them Thoroughly
Move the animal to a warm, draft-free space. Use clean towels, a heat lamp placed safely, or a blow dryer to fully dry the coat. Wet hair = rapid heat loss.

🍼 3. Get Warm Colostrum Into Them
Once they’re warmed back to at least 100°F, offer warm colostrum.
Do NOT tube or bottle feed a lamb/kid that is too cold—the gut can’t absorb properly and aspiration risk increases.

🧣 4. Use Warming Boxes or Heating Pads (Safely)
A simple warming box with a controlled heat source works great. Keep temperatures moderate to avoid overheating. Rotate animals out once stable.

🌬️ 5. Return to the Mom When Stable
Once alert, warm, and nursing, reunite with the ewe or doe and ensure the pair bonds and that the baby latches.
