On Christmas night, Hungry Hill Farm lost it's Queen Bee. Since moving to Virginia in 1983, Joan would set up at numerous festivals, farmers markets, and craft shows selling our honey. She was the bookkeeper for the family business for many years up until about 5 years ago. Her smile and laugh will be greatly missed around the farm.

Joan Clayton was a woman defined by devotion: to her family, to her community, and to the quiet, steadfast values she lived by every day of her long and meaningful life. She passed peacefully on December 25, 2025, surrounded by loved ones, leaving behind a legacy rooted in service, loyalty, and love.
Born on December 17, 1930, in Trenton, New Jersey, Joan grew up with a strong sense of responsibility and purpose that guided her for more than nine decades. She graduated from Hamilton High School and attended Rider College, already demonstrating the independence and determination that would become hallmarks of her life. That same spirit led her to serve her country as a member of the Navy Reserves, a role she held with pride.
In July of 1952, Joan married the love of her life, Glenn Clayton Sr. Together, they shared 73 and a half years of marriage, building a life grounded in commitment, respect, and enduring partnership. Their marriage was the foundation of a family Joan cherished deeply.
Joan is survived by her beloved husband, Glenn Clayton Sr.; her sons, Glenn Clayton Jr. (wife Louise) and Charles Clayton; her grandchildren, Christopher Clayton, Katherine Clayton (husband Colin), and Douglas Clayton; and her cherished great-grandsons, Eric and Nate Johnson. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, all of whom held a special place in her heart.
Joan spent the first fifty years of her life in New Jersey, where she was deeply involved in her community. She was a charter member of the Point Pleasant Borough Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and worked for many years as a special police officer and crossing guard, roles that reflected her watchful care for others. In 1983, she moved to Virginia, where she continued serving her community through work at the Nelson County Visitors Center and by supporting the family honey business.
Her commitment to service extended through decades of organizational involvement. Joan was a 75-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Hamilton Township, New Jersey, and an active member of the Clifford Ruritan Club, reflecting a lifelong dedication to fellowship and community engagement.
Above all else, Joan was devoted to her family. She was immensely proud of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and her love and guidance shaped generations. Her presence was steady, her kindness unwavering, and her life well lived. She will be remembered always for her grace, strength, and the deep love she shared so freely.
A funeral service will be held at 3pm, Tuesday, December 30, 2025 at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Arrington with Rev. Donna Steckline officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
A visitation will be held Monday night from 6-8pm at the Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel of Lovingston.
Family and friends may sign her virtual guestbook at www.wellssheffield.com

Last week we filled a used Bourbon barrel with honey. The goal is to let it soak for 90 days and have a barrel aged honey as the finished product. If things turn out well, look for our new product online and at the farmers markets starting around the beginning of March. Thanks to Silverback Distillery for providing us with one of their award winning Bourbon barrels.
