Despite the wettest Spring on record for Western New York, we have successfully completed the two eternal annual milestones that are essential for any dairy farm. Our corn is planted, and our first cutting of hay is harvested. While the neighbors still hem and haw, it feels great to be done. We owe a large debt of gratitude to the Rodas family, who joined our cause this Spring, and have been instrumental in helping us grow the crops that our cows need. From cautiously starting to plow some ground, to helping us pick out the machinery that we need, to coming in early and getting home late, shade tree lunches with our wives, milkshake and apple pie deliveries once the kids get off the bus, fertilizer baths, broken chains, wheel seals that required “special tools”, and the list goes on. We couldn’t have gotten to this point without Chris and Melinda Rodas, and their boys that absolutely love farming. On a farm of our size, we’re large enough to be “big”, but we’re not big enough to be a “large” farm. Having a family that can stand side by side with us to make it all work is wonderful. We’re very grateful, and excited about the future of farming in this little corner of Farmington. 🌽🐄🍁
