Goldenrod Season Is Here!

As September arrives, our honeybees turn their attention to one of the last major blooms of the season—Goldenrod.

From late summer into early fall, its bright yellow flowers fill fields, meadows, and roadsides, providing an important source of nectar and pollen as the days begin to grow shorter.

For our honeybees, Goldenrod is an important part of preparing for the months ahead—helping colonies build the food stores and strength they’ll need going into winter.

Another reminder that even as summer begins to fade, there’s still plenty happening in the bee yard!

Another Day of Beekeeping in the Books!

Today we completed treating all of our hives for Varroa mites using Varroxsan, an oxalic-acid treatment.

Varroa mites are one of the most serious threats facing honeybee colonies.

They attach themselves to developing and adult honeybees, feeding primarily on their fat body tissue.

Just as importantly, Varroa mites act as vectors for numerous honeybee viruses, transmitting viruses from one bee to another and potentially weakening the entire colony.

One of the reasons we use Varroxsan is that it can be applied while honey supers are on the hive when used according to the label.

Oxalic acid does not accumulate in beeswax, and Varroxsan provides a slow, extended release of oxalic acid for 56 days—covering approximately three Varroa mite brood cycles.

This extended treatment period is particularly important because Varroa mites reproduce inside capped brood cells.

As new honeybees emerge, the treatment continues working against the mites over multiple brood cycles.

As we work through the apiary, if we notice a hive needs some additional attention, we take care of it before moving on to the next one.

This particular hive had a higher number of Small Hive Beetles, so while we had it apart to apply the Varroxsan strips, we also added a Freeman Beetle Trap bottom board.

The Freeman bottom board replaces the hive's regular bottom board and uses an vegetable oil-filled tray beneath a screened floor.

Honeybees remain safely above the screen, while Small Hive Beetles that are chased down by the bees can fall through the screen and into the oil below, where they become trapped.

It's another tool we use to help the honeybees keep beetle populations under control.

And this hive was absolutely packed with honeybees!

Earlier this season, we harvested more than 100 pounds of honey from this hive—and it now has approximately another 60 pounds of late-season honey waiting to be harvested.

Healthy colonies require attention throughout the season, and sometimes one job in the apiary naturally leads to another.

From the Jersey Shore to Boston!

A little bit of the Jersey Shore is on its way north!

Our Beeswax Mini Lighthouse Candles are headed to Boston, bringing along the warm, natural glow of pure beeswax and a touch of the coast.

With the holiday gift-giving season getting closer, our Mini Lighthouse is a wonderful choice for anyone who loves the beach, boating, lighthouses, or simply being near the water.

Each one is hand-poured by Mary here in Tinton Falls, New Jersey, using pure beeswax.

Small enough to make a charming gift, but distinctive enough to remind someone of summer days by the shore—even when those days seem a long way off.

Safe travels to Boston, little lighthouses!

Best Wishes,
Mary & Ed

Some of the late-summer and early-fall flowers our Honeybees will be visiting from late August through late September...

As summer begins to wind down, the landscape around us continues to provide important sources of nectar and pollen for our Honeybees.

Goldenrod, asters, boneset, Joe-Pye w**d, smartw**d and other late-season blooms will help keep our bees busy as we make the gradual transition from summer into fall.

It’s another reminder that even as the seasons begin to change, there is still plenty happening in the world of our Honeybees!

Mary is already busy in her workshop hand-pouring candles for the gift-giving season ahead.

Here she is making her Extra Large Beeswax Pillar Candle, with its distinctive rolled-candle look.

At 7½ inches tall and weighing approximately 28 ounces, this is one of Mary’s most substantial beeswax candles—and one that certainly makes an impression when given as a gift.

A pure beeswax, hand-poured creation made right here in Monmouth County...

It rained hard during the night, but the early morning skies are beginning to clear.

If the weather continues to cooperate, we’ll be heading out to spend some time with our honeybees today.

There’s always plenty to do in the bee yards this time of year!
