I'm sharing part of our origin story on the blog this week, so here's some throwback pictures of our early years on the farm.

One part of our origin story began on the night when I decided impulsively to eat meat again - after being vegetarian for eight years.

I needed to eat meat for my health. But if I was eating meat, how could I still uphold the values I'd had for several years? How could I support animals being treated humanely, and agriculture nourishing and supporting land and waterways rather than harming them?

Answering these questions led to us building our first mobile chicken shelter and raising 50 meat birds. And from there it grew, and grew. We now raise 3,000 meat chickens a year, and deliver them to the doors of our neighbors and friends.

It feels like everyone (and everything) on the farm is on the move lately.

In addition to our regular movements (moving the chickens every morning + the pigs 1-2 times a week), our cows are grazing at Bottom of the Fox Farm for the next few weeks.

One place you can find us standing still? Our farm store. You'll find us there every Saturday from 10 am - 1 pm. And this Saturday, we've got special guests: our mobile knife sharpeners, Keen Edge Mobile Sharpening. Come get your knives sharpened (because I bet they're super dull!) while you shop.

The farm tour is THIS Saturday!

If you're on the fence about ordering from the farm, coming in person and seeing our farm is one of the best ways to make up your mind. You'll get to see what we're doing and decide if you want to be a part of a community that does things differently.

You can get your car pass now at the link: https://carolinafarmstewards.org/piedmont-farm-tour/

Hi 👋 I'm Michelle, and I'm one-half of the Little Way Farm team (with my husband, Joe).

I'm the one behind anything you read or hear from our farm, whether that's on our website, here on social media, in our emails, or in face-to-face conversation at our farm store on Saturdays.

Here's three things I want you to know about our farm:

✔ We raise truly pasture-raised, non-GMO chicken and heritage pork, 100% grass-fed and grass-finished beef, and raw honey. It's a small family team doing chores, packing your orders, and delivering it to your door - me, my husband, our neighbor, and our kids. No greenwashing and no shortcuts.

✔ We work to make sourcing non-GMO, pasture-raised and grass-fed food easier for you. We offer farm pick-up and home delivery options, and we partner with other farms and vendors to offer dairy, eggs, lamb, organic flour, & more.

✔ We strive to be transparent about our pricing and practices. We talk often with our customers about why our food costs more than what you see at the store (spoiler: it's way different!) and how we can make that work for you.

I'd love to hear your story or meet you in person. Stop by the farm store any Saturday from 10 am - 1 pm, visit us on the Piedmont Farm Tour on April 25th, or send me a message or email.

The spring chicken sale is on! It's the best time of the year to shop our non-GMO, pasture-raised chicken - whether you already know and love it, or whether you've been waiting to try it.

We work really hard to bring you the best pastured chicken possible - moved every day, foraging for bugs on fresh grass, getting sunshine and fresh air, eating NC-grown and milled feed that's non-GMO, no-till, and delivered directly to our farm.

And we feel really proud to do this in a state where half a billion poultry are raised in confinement and generate huge amounts of waste that pollute the air and leach into waterways.

If you want chicken that's raised different, and impacts your community positively - and still want to get it at a discounted price! - this is the time for you. Shop at the link below.

Dehydrated sourdough starters, available at the farm store tomorrow!

Want to get started on your own sourdough, but haven't found a starter yet? Stop by the farm store tomorrow from 10 am - 1 pm. Our wonderful retail assistant, Stephanie, has put together these sourdough starters. She'll walk you through the basics and help you find an organic flour from Lindley Mills that works for you.

"What should I try first?" is a question I get a lot on Saturdays at the farm store. And I usually have the same answer: "You should try our chicken!"

It takes a lot of labor, love, patience, and yes, sweat, to get our chicken to your plate. And that's intentional. We raise our chickens, and slaughter them, here on the farm because we want you to have the best poultry possible.

We move them every day to fresh pasture. We water multiple times a day in the summer. We source non-GMO feed that's grown and milled here in North Carolina, and delivered directly to our farm, so we know exactly what is (and isn't) going into their feed. And we invest in building a team that helps us process here on the farm, twice a month, to create the lowest stress and highest-quality environment possible.

And we think it produces meat that's truly exceptional - from the fresh air and forage they eat, to the exercise they get, to the beneficial impact they have on our pastures. In a state where roughly half a billion poultry are raised indoors, without movement or sunlight, we think that's a big deal.

If you want to learn more about why our chicken is different, click below to read the latest blog post I've written about why we think our chicken is better - for your health, for your drinking water, and for the air you breathe.
