Okfuskee Farm

Okfuskee Farm Broad-acre Permaculture, Holistic Homesteading, Grass-fed Lamb, Pastured Pork, Small Fruit and Mixed Produce We did not have the privelege of knowing Ms.

Okfuskee Farm is located in an agricultural area called Silk Hope, 8 miles from Siler City and 14 miles from Pittsboro, in Chatham County, NC. We purchased it on auction through Jerry Harris Auctions in June 2008. It was previously owned by the late Mildred Fields, described by all as a Saint. Fields but based on the early success of our farm we believe her spirit lives on in this place we now cal

l Okfuskee. Our farm is based on permaculture and agroecological principles, including ecological site planning, water-focused design, bio-diverse and integrated livestock farming, no-till organic vegetable production, and agroforestry; all with a goal towards local sustainability. Basically it is a 20 acre research project with the philosophy that "anything worth doing, is worth doing wrong...the first time." The name Okfuskee was inspired by the Okfuskee County, Oklahoma birth place of Woodie Guthrie, an American folk hero.

It's the day after Bobby Tucker's birthday and I just remembered my main present for him this evening that I completely forgot to mention yesterday! We filmed footage for a grazing video last Father's Day and I finally got around to putting the clips together last week. It was scheduled to be public on his birthday, but forgot to tell him it was there. Whoops.
These videos are primarily archival material (amateur quality) for our family but hopefully may help others who might be interested in the lifestyle we lead.

If you're like us, onions are a foundational ingredient for pretty much every meal we cook. Even though onions are relatively inexpensive to buy, and the profit margin is small for any we do sell, growing all of the onions that we need for the entire year means that we have even more meals that came entirely from the farm. That makes us happy...and that is worth a lot.

If you're interested in how we harvest, cure and store our onions, here's a short (4 min) video on just that.

In this video we offer an overview of the harvesting, processing and curing of onions. The steps are simple, some are passive (waiting), and kid-friendly. Us...

This one is for all the grafting geeks out there. Bobby is one of you…
He claims that top-working trees has been his best use of time in the farm.
If you didn’t know what a graft looked like you’d be wondering who the heck left tape on trees all over the farm. He’s been busy this late spring and early summer performing tree marriages.

In this video we demonstrate the Texas Bark Inlay grafting method on a pecan tree at our home farm. This agroforestry method is proving to be one of the best...

Heyo! We're working on documenting some of the cool things that we've been doing on the farm. I'm S-L-O-W-L-Y navigating the world of iMovie and youtube, but it's worth the effort to archive our life a bit more and share some of the things we've learned on the farm along the way. If you're interested in one of the many agroforestry practices we're using, check out this video, hot off the press:

In this video we demonstrate one of the agroforestry strategies we utilize on our farm---densely planting cheap pioneer species (loblolly pines in this case)...

Debbie Roos did a great job covering the recent farm visit to our leased property where we raise our Katahdin sheep flock. Thanks NC AgVentures for the grant for livestock handling equipment that has made our process so much simpler and safer!

It felt impossible to walk through making jam in 6 minutes, but no babies or background profanity made its way onto live TV, so I call it a minor win. 👩‍🌾👩‍🍳🍓
Shoutout to the Guilford College Sustainable Food Systems Program!

Bronwyn Tucker, the owner of Okfuskee Farm, shared all the tips people need to know to make triple berry jam from scratch.
