Rita was born on November 30, 1940, to Fred and Lorraine Cox in Dallas, Oregon.
Rita met the love of her life, David, through a mutual friend at a concert in 1959 while she was a senior in high school. They married in October 1961 and moved into a small home on the Doerfler family farm. After David graduated in 1963, they purchased their first home and farm, continuing the Doerfler family legacy of farming while raising their three children. Through their hard work and dedication, Ioka Farms became an important part of their family’s life and legacy.
Rita’s passion for Oregon agriculture led her to devote many years of service to numerous boards and committees. She was a founding member of Oregon Women for Agriculture and served on the Oregon Ag Fest Board of Directors, helping develop the very first Ag Fest event. Rita believed deeply in supporting her community and was an active member of the McAlpin Stitchers, Victor Point School Parents Club, Silverton Junior Women’s Club and the Zenith Women’s group.
Rita was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. When she wasn’t working on the farm or traveling to support her grandchildren’s passions and activities, she could often be found lovingly tending her rose garden.
Rita is survived by her husband of 64½ years, David; her children, Teresa, Michele (Richard), and Donald (Debbie); grandchildren Ryan (Kerstin), Brittany (Alex), Rylee (Justin), Blake and Madison; great-grandchild, Barrett; sister Sharlene Breyman; brothers Robert and Richard Cox. She is predeceased by parents Fred and Lorraine Cox.
The family would like to thank her wonderful caregivers — Brittany, Cassie, Mandy, and Leslie — as well as Serenity Hospice, for their compassionate care and support.
A private family interment was held on May 22 at Union Hill Cemetery. A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on June 18 at the Mt. Angel Festhalle.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Oregon Women for Agriculture, Oregon Ag Fest, or the Oregon Aglink Foundation.
