It has been a busy weekend. Completed pulling all taps today after church and then worked the field for Christmas tree plantings. Thankfully the wind dried it out enough to get tilled.
We had a short maple season because of the extended cold and then extreme warm up. However we had two very strong weeks and are thankful for that. 🙏

5x16x5 stainless tank used for maple sap. Approx 2500 gallon capacity with 2” outlet. No longer need bc we are only tapping in one location now. 4 years old. $3700

When you boil maple sap to make maple syrup you will get the natural residue in the pans of niter/sugar sand. This can cause your syrup to be darker and also be detrimental to your pans (an expensive mistake). We have pan washers on both the front and back pans that we run after each boil for multiple hours to remove the vast majority of that niter. The washers use permeate, the pure H2O that contains no mineral or sugar that is removed from the sap during the reverse osmosis concentrating process. Nothing in the process of producing pure maple syrup goes to waste. All by product water has a specific use each day.

Since we will not have an open house this spring we are going to share a number of detailed videos of what making pure maple syrup on a wet/dry tubing system with vacuum is like.
Today Chris had to find leaks created during the high winds yesterday. After boiling yesterday he noticed the gauge at the pump house was 3” less on the vacuum. Early this morning he began walking the woods and after another 5 hours in the woods he found the damage shown in these two videos as well as more leaks.
It has been the most difficult year getting vacuum above 25” he has had spending over 30 hours walking the system multiple times but praise God it is now there.

Chris was in the woods for a long, 9 hour day fixing leaks in the maple tubing system. This is a video of some of the things we find.

-11 degrees at Cedar Run Farm this last morning of what has been a beautiful January 2026.
The forecast shows extended cold into mid February. The last time we had weather like this was in 2015 when February was a frozen tundra much like this winter has been. When the weather broke we had a tsunami of sap but season lasted just under 2 weeks. We may be in for a similar scenario this year. Regardless, we are extremely grateful for a real winter and will be grateful for whatever the Lord provides.

The 2026 maple season began in earnest in mid December with repairs, trees cut off sap lines and spouts put into drip lines. Last Thursday Chris began tapping and has for the past 7 days. He had some great help from Case Landis, Sage Landis, Kaden Huffman, Kayden Utt and Kendall Huffman for which we are very grateful! Today we finished tapping and have between 3800-3900 taps in.

Now we wait….With the forecast it doesn’t appear there will be any sap runs until early February. Until then we will get some things tidied up and enjoy the snow and cold that appears to be heading our way.
