Main Farms utilizes the latest and best practices to farm efficiently and responsibly. One example: monitoring wells.

In 2024, Main Farms made a substantial voluntary investment to partner with Midwest Water Stewards to install four water monitoring wells to ensure that we are using water responsibly. Included in that effort was a commitment to making whatever changes that were necessary should we ever learn that we are having an adverse effect on that important natural resource.

The Midwest Water Stewards network of farmers in Michigan and northern Indiana has installed more than 230 monitoring wells with the same goals in mind.

There is no way we could plant more than 4,000 acres of potatoes using this planter, but it works perfectly the Potato Outreach Program led by Chris Long of Michigan State University.

Chris and his team spent some time at Main Farms last week planting 30-plus varieties of potatoes in a test plot. It is one of 38 test plots the MSU team is planting in Michigan this year.

The Potato Outreach Program works to identify potato varieties that:
• Grow well in the Michigan climate
• Display good agronomic traits
• Are profitable for producers
• Are resistant to diseases, pests, biotic and abiotic stresses

Chris Long of Michigan State University leads the Potato Outreach Program, a collaboration between MSU and the Michigan Potato Industry Commission (Michigan Potatoes). This program supports Michigan potato growers by conducting on-farm research that apply to all aspects of potato production.

Here are photos of Chris and his team working last week to plant 30-plus varieties of potatoes in a test plot at Main Farms. It is one of 38 test plots the MSU team is planting in Michigan this year. Samples of the potatoes grown in the test plots will be harvested and displayed in August at MSU's potato variety field day tour.

What a beautiful sight! The first potatoes we planted are starting to emerge nicely from the ground. This field of Atlantic-variety potatoes will be harvested in early August. The potatoes will be shipped directly to potato chip plants.

Main Farms lost a dear friend and coworker this past weekend. Jeff Sargent started working for the farm in 2014 after healing from a combined lung and heart transplant at the age of 56. He was the first combined transplant patient for the surgeons at Spectrum Health of West Michigan.

Jeff was instrumental in fitting our Christmas tree ground and making it farmable. He helped with tiling projects, demolition, ground clearing, and anything else that the farm needed.

Jeff was a hard worker and an exceptional equipment operator. When he wasn’t working you could find him hunting, fishing, or with his most loyal companion, R***r. We are endlessly grateful for the years Jeff spent on the farm. He will be missed.

The Main Farms team is in the process of planting 3,000 acres — almost five square miles — of soybeans. Here is the soybean planter in action. It plants 32 rows at a time with a spacing of 15 inches between rows.

Our soybeans are stored at the Lakeview Elevator and eventually go to Zeeland Farm Services, Inc. (ZFS). They are crushed and the oil is extracted. What remains is soymeal that is used as a protein supplement in livestock feed.

It's potato planting season! The crop cart in this video services two potato planters at the same time. You also might notice a green disc on a post hovering above the planter. That helps with GPS and auto steer, which allows us to plant seed in the most efficient manner possible.

Main Farms utilizes the latest and best practices to farm efficiently and responsibly.

One example: Main Farms plants cover crops on all of our early-harvested crops like wheat, oats, green beans, peas and soybeans. The cover crops we use are rye; oats and tillage radishes; and peas. This helps increase our soil organic matter, which is helpful in maintaining the health of our topsoil, and helps reduce wind and rain erosion. We track the soil organic matter by percentage annually.
