Growing 160 million pounds of potatoes requires a lot of tractor operating. It also involves a lot of truck driving.

Our potato trucks that carry potatoes from the field to our shipping facility or a storage building hold about 36,000 pounds of potatoes. That means Main Farms potato trucks will make more than 4,500 round trips to and from the field during this year's harvest. They will cover about 80,000 miles on those trips.

The Main Farms team started harvesting and shipping potatoes to potato chip plants last week. Every time we load a truck we pull a few potatoes and fry up a few chips to make sure all is well with the potatoes.

Here is the first chip sample of the year. They fried up perfectly and are the proper size for chips. These were made from Atlantic-variety potatoes harvested from the first field of potatoes we planted in the spring.

Emily Main of Main Farms recently attended the Montcalm Field Day, which took place at the Montcalm Research Center in Lakeview. You will spot her in the photos with her special guest for the day: her 6-year-old daughter, Isla.

The field day is an annual event, and it's always a great place to cross paths with great farming colleagues from across the state and to hear the latest and best farming practices. It was a very productive day overall. The discussion on pressure bruising and potato diseases was a highlight.

A major summer project here at Main Farms is cleaning all of our potato storage buildings in preparation for filling them with potatoes in the fall. This is one of our older storage buildings featuring in-floor air tunnels. Air is pushed into the tunnels and then flows up through the slats and through the potato pile.

We harvest potatoes throughout the month of August and ship them directly to potato chip plants. We will start filling our storage buildings in early September.

🌱 From our fields to Ge**er baby food! 🌱

Ge**er started harvesting green beans here Thursday, and their crews should wrap up harvest this week. All 300-plus acres of green beans we grew will be made into Ge**er baby food.

That’s a whole lot of green beans … and a whole lot of first bites!

Potato harvest season is here!

On Monday morning, the Main Farms team started harvesting the first field of potatoes that we planted in the spring. Here are some of those already-washed Atlantic-variety potatoes as they make their way down the grading line and into a truck to be shipped to a potato chip plant.

We will be shipping potatoes directly to potato chip plants for the next couple months. In October, we will start storing potatoes for shipments throughout the fall, winter and spring.

Here is an inside look at the new potato storage building we are putting up in Trufant. It will hold 10 million pounds of potatoes when completed. We plan to store potatoes in it this fall. Harvest season starts next week, and we should be putting potatoes into storage by early September.
