Magpie mini-farm & nursery Welcome. Magpie is an eclectic mix. It's an attempt at gathering my interests to create an unique business that hopefully can fill a niche in my community.

At Magpie mini-farm stands you’ll find locally-grown garden starts in the spring, fresh produce and flowers grown with organic methods, throughout summer, and during the cold, dark months, there’s a migration to indoor creative endeavors and hand-crafted items inspired by the natural world. Here’s our current inventory list, as requested. Please read instructions at bottom of list. There’s low stock on a lot of varieties, and we will be filling requests as we get them.

Hoping the process will be:
1) place plant requests to Magpie mini-farm directly through Facebook messenger
2) we’ll confirm receipt of requests, pull order & send an invoice
3) once invoice is paid, plants will be delivered asap starting Sunday at noon.

Thanks everyone!

Update 2: Current inventory list has been posted on the Magpie mini-farm page.

Update: Thanks for commenting! It seems providing a list is the favored option, so we’ll be working on one tomorrow and will try post it tomorrow evening. Orders will be filled on Sunday in the order they are received. Closing comments on this post now, so we actually have some plants left to list.

Sneak peek at some of the new plants that’ll be ready this weekend. We are very excited that the Shooting stars & Gerbera Daisies (in 2 colors) are finally very close to blooming (these take extra long to grow from seed)! There will also be a few Scented- leaf (rose-scent) geraniums, delphiniums (magic fountain mix) in 2 pot sizes, assorted columbines, a couple of young fuchsias, serviceberry saplings, bleeding heart, sugar pie pumpkin starts, just to name a few.

It’s a very busy weekend…still trying to decide when to have a sale. Thinking about having a farm-stand type sale (like we’ve been doing) on Sunday? Or would it be more convenient to be able to place orders to be delivered if we created a list?

Thank you for the inquiries! Magpie will not be having a sale this weekend, but be sure to check out the other plant sales happening around town. We are taking a break from plant sales to deliver Higher Ground garden beds, and to finish business plantings.

There’s just a few veggie plants left from our previous sale, which can be available now (cucumbers, peppers, fennel, celery—if interested please message and we’ll figure out how to get them to you). We hope to have a small scattering of new offerings (hopefully Gerbera daisies, and some more perennials), in addition to some plants on clearance at our sale next weekend.

Update: It’s 4 o’clock and we are pretty much sold out of everything that was ready for today (except for a few types of peppers and pickling cucumbers— message me if you are interested either) so we are closing early. Thanks again for the great turnout!! Apologies if we had sold out of something you were looking for.

We will be doing some plantings for businesses and then planting at the mini farm— after which we will likely have another sale.

* it’s still a bit early for these crops, so be prepared to hold them for a week or so and finish hardening them off (slowly acclimating them to outdoor wind & sun exposure, temperature etc). For best results, a greenhouse or greenhouse-type enclosure is highly recommended for basil, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers & eggplants. I’ll have a limited quantity of windowsill-size tomatoes and zinnias (“zinnitas”) if you don’t have a greenhouse but have a sunny window to grow in.
Zucchini and other squashes should do ok outside, once the ground soil warms a bit more, but locations that are sheltered from the wind and that get full sun would be best. I’m happy to answer questions at the sale.

**depending on the weather we’ll either be set up on 12th or set up inside the yard to use the greenhouse/ tent.

Thank you all so much for coming out to support our nursery sales and buy our Skagway-grown starts. We’ll admit, we were a little nervous beforehand with the weather and a busy weekend full of plant sales and events. Turns out, we didn’t need to worry at all.

Your support absolutely lifted our spirits, and we are so thankful. Seeing so many people excited about gardening and supporting local growers, even in the pouring rain, makes it worth it.

We source as many of our supplies and services as locally as possible, so supporting our mini farm/ nursery also helps support other local businesses throughout the community. We’re also proud that most of our starts are grown using locally produced hydroelectric energy (most of the time), helping keep our growing process closer to home and a little more sustainable.

Thank you again for making our sale a success. We loved seeing familiar faces, meeting new gardeners, and helping everyone get excited for the growing season! 🌱💚.

We plan to have at least one more sale for warmer season/ greenhouse varieties (tomatoes, basil, zucchini and other types of squash, peppers, cucumbers, etc), and some more flowers (all provided we don’t have any more mishaps like our greenhouse shelves collapsing — yes this happened the night before our sale, crushing many of our dahlias 🙁, sorry).

Photo of our new (returning?) air bnb guests— they get free housing in exchange for the pest control they do on the mini farm. ♥️

About to open for the afternoon/ evening part of our sale. 5-7pm Stop by if you missed us earlier.

Looking for gift ideas for Mother’s Day?

Give a gift that lasts! Lilac bushes can last over a century*, blooming most years** during late spring, filling yards with their sweet nostalgic scent.

Magpie will have a small selection of lilac bushes at our Saturday sale.
Sorry no preorder or holds. All 3 varieties are rated hardy to zone 3 (more than hardy enough for Skagway).

* planting in the right conditions will increase longevity— they prefer full sun and good drainage, otherwise they are pretty low maintenance.
** every few years, they seem to take a break and have only a light flush of flowers. Full flowering-mode usually returns the next year.

Just wanted to post a quick thank you and update to those inquiring about our next sale. Your interest is keeping us going! We are in a mad dash to get everything priced/ labeled, and to give our next batch of starts (mostly flowers) a last bit of love before we send them out in to the world a bit early, So, in the interest of saving a bit of time, I thought I’d post a general update:

We are trying to do a sale very soon so that gardeners are able to first check out what locally-grown Magpie flower starts will be available. Considering the weather forecast, the cruise ship schedule, and where we are at with preparations, it is seeming like Saturday will be the best day (sorry to those who were hoping for Friday— would creating a list of what we’ll have help?) I’ll post again with our final day and time decision soon, probably late, late tonight. Stay tuned! Hopefully this reaches everyone who is interested.

PS Forecast is predicting near freezing temps (34F) tonight, so if you have garden starts you may want to bring them in, or if they are already planted, cover them up.
