A Pennsylvania farmer made headlines after reportedly turning down a $15 million offer from developers who wanted to purchase his land for a proposed data center project. Rather than sell the property for commercial development, the farmer chose to preserve the land’s agricultural legacy. Instead of accepting the lucrative buyout, he placed the farmland under a conservation easement, a legal agreement that permanently restricts non-agricultural development. While this decision brought him significantly less money — reportedly around $2 million for selling the development rights — it ensured that the land would remain farmland for future generations.

Such facilities often require large tracts of land and substantial energy and water resources. For this farmer, preserving family heritage and protecting open farmland outweighed the financial incentive, reflecting broader debates about land use, sustainability, and rapid technological expansion in the United States.
