Knowing the signs before kidding can help keep both the doe and her babies safe. From swollen udders to restless behavior, these changes often mean labor is near. Always monitor closely and prepare a clean, quiet space for delivery. 🐐🤍

After a lot of work, I finally listed my livestock care binders on Etsy.

I made these originally for my own farm records and goat buyers, but enough people asked about them that I decided to make them available publicly too.

I currently have:
* Goat Care Binder
* Sheep Care Binder
* Smaller printable add-on packs

They include things like:
• health + medication tracking
• breeding/kidding/lambing info
• feeding guides
• fencing + bedding info
• first-time owner checklists
• glossary pages
• sales forms/deposit forms
• milk handling + biosecurity info
• emergency references
• printable trackers

Everything was made from my own experience running a small farm and keeping records for my herd/flock here in Maine. I wanted something practical, easy to use, and actually helpful for both new and experienced owners.

The full binders are also included free with any goats I sell. 🖤

Link is attached if anyone wants to check them out. 🖤

Sulfur for Skin Conditions

Sulfur is hands down my favorite remedy for virtually all skin conditions. We've used it for eczema, leg mites, ear mites, staph, and other conditions successfully in our family and with the goats.

A simple recipe:

2-3 tablespoons organic yellow sulfur powder
1/2 cup solid coconut oil

Melt the coconut oil in a double boiler and add the sulfur, stirring well to combine. Pour into your container and allow to harden. The sulfur will settle some but it's okay to use all parts of the salve anyway.

You can add tea tree, lavender, or lemongrass essential oils for treating mites, about 1/2 teaspoon total.

Apply liberally to all affected areas twice daily for several days. Rest, then apply again if needed.

A little flock update. 🐑

This year I added four ewes to the farm:
• Veronica & Ms. Frizzle — Katahdin/Finn crosses
• Honey & Nera — Katahdins

And this fall they’ll be paired with Harry, my Icelandic ram.

One thing I’m really excited about with these future lambs is the variety that could show up from crossing my Katahdin/Katahdin-Finn ewes with Harry.

The goal is still primarily hardy, practical meat sheep — but with Harry in the mix, there’s also a strong chance of some really beautiful wool and primitive traits showing through too.

Possible traits I may see:
• solid black lambs
• solid white lambs
• black & white spotted patterns
• primitive/mouflon-style markings
• cream, tan, grey, and frosted coloring
• mixed wool/hair coats
• fluffy necks and thicker fleeces
• athletic builds and strong pasture instincts
• possibly both horned and polled lambs

I’m especially excited because the flock already has such a wide range:
• Honey & Ms. Frizzle are solid white
• Nera is solid black
• Veronica is black and white
• Harry is cream with grey and brown tones and large horns

Genetically, these pairings could honestly go in a lot of directions. I’m hoping for hardy, colorful, good-minded sheep with personality and that rugged old-world look Icelandics are known for.

What I’m aiming to produce are moderate-framed, hardy sheep that do well on pasture and handle Maine weather well.

These lambs should have:
• strong foraging instincts
• athletic, practical builds
• decent muscling
• improved cold tolerance
• and more unique fleece textures and coloring than a standard hair sheep flock

While they likely won’t mature into massive commercial terminal sheep types, I’m aiming more toward efficient, easy-keeping animals that are manageable on a small farm setting.

Temperament is also a major focus for me. Harry has an exceptionally calm and respectful personality for a ram, and that’s something I hope carries into future lambs as well. Good-minded livestock make daily handling, flock management, and overall farm life significantly better.

And honestly… Harry deserves some credit too. He got a whole bunch of kisses on the nose tonight for being such a good boy. ❤️
