Focus Dude & Guest Ranch

Focus Dude & Guest Ranch Focus Ranch- a traditional working cattle ranch offering guests a ranch experience. We run yearling cattle as the basis of our agricultural operation.

We are located on the western Colorado and southern Wyoming border in a section of the Northern Rocky Mountains called the Sierra Madres. By agricultural industry standards (pounds gained per head per day), there are few yearling ranches in our class. There are two reasons for this: the quality of our grass and the guest business. We ride six days a week with our cattle -moving them through four p

astures on the ranch three times and seven pastures in the forest twice-25 moves in about 120 days. We ride with one, two or three professionals and our guests to gather the cattle and move them slowly. When they are not due to move we take the time to ride through them and check their health, cutting out any that are sick to doctor them.

Our dear friend Maggie, reminded me that I haven't posted ranch pictures in some time. We have had a nice winter and now it will soon be spring. Here are some photos taken near the end of winter. Terry and I are both well, covid vaccinated and doing what comes naturally, social distancing-at least for a while longer. Ranch workers will begin arriving in April and we will pick up our pace!

I am so happy for Merlin. He is such a great horse and worked so hard for many years. He deserves the best-a mare and steers to keep him on his toes๐Ÿ’š

And finally all of the Focus Dude & Guest Ranch retired dude geldings have been adopted! Merlin found his home being BFF to a senior mare and a couple pet steers. All 6 geldings have now gone to wonderful homes. Thank you to our tribe for providing the funding we needed to get these guys on track to find homes! ๐Ÿ’•

Here is a link to the Colorado Horse Rescue Network. They are a non-profit and rely on charitable donations and the kindness of horse lovers. They have given me a new cause to support and with good reason!

We did part with six of our older horses and sent them to the Colorado Horse Rescue Network where they will be adopted and placed in their final pastures. This is a great organization as the horses will be able to have a less strenuous life in their old age but still be enjoyed by individuals. Many of you might remember them and perhaps rode them. They are special and will be missed but I am happy and grateful for this wonderful organization.

So great to see these "spa day" photos. It makes me less sad about sending them off, knowing that they are being well taken care of and will find new retirement homes where they will be loved. Thank you CHRN!

I blame Covid-19 for this long overdue post. Terry and I are doing well. We have received all our cattle for the season and they are now pasturing in Medicine Bow National Forest. We have chosen not to take any guests because the virus guidelines for our protection, including the staff, are additional work and not foolproof. We miss Juan Carlos and Angel as the situation in Peru is not good and their travel is prohibited. We are fortunate to have hired a good crew who are willing and able to wear many hats and meet the day to day challenges of ranching. They provided me with their photos and a brief bio. I wish you could meet them in person but here is a virtual introduction.

It has been a long winter and still more to come. We awoke to a chilly minus 31 this morning and a high temperature of 16. These temperatures motivated me to share a few winter scenes from about 2 weeks ago. I believe we have had another 20 inches of snow since then.

After October winter-like weather events, we are now enjoying above normal temperatures for November. There are no complaints about doing evening chores when Nature provides breathtaking entertainment.

Hmmm, June was the last time I posted-really? The months fly by and the ranch, animals, guests, staff and life in general keep us on the go. Those who visited and helped with the cattle can rest assured that your efforts were not in vain. We shipped the last 4 truck loads about mid-September. The weights were very good. The missing 5 cattle were found in East Cottonwood. Another is still with the neighbors. All the staff have departed except Juan Carlos and Angel. They too, will be returning home soon. Until they leave and/or we get buried in snow, fall will remain busy with projects. Here are a few recent photos.

I am overdue for posting and if it weren't for our guest Sarah Stanley from England, who recently spent a week with us, then I would not even be posting now. I just have to share her video and comments with you...

Springtime transformations have progressed quickly from when these pictures were taken a week ago. We just had a nice thunderstorm and now the grass is even greener. Time to venture out again with the camera!
