Most important things I learned about duck brooding this spring: ducks grow FAST and are TOUGH.

Ducklings are fully grown in 8-10 weeks.

You can tell by 6 weeks whether the duckling is a male (drake) or female (hen) by the sound of their quack. Hens have the traditional QUACK sound while the drakes are low and raspy toned.

I had the hardest time keeping ducklings in the brooding box and replacing bedding or pads 3 times a day due to it getting so wet and nasty so quickly. The only reason I kept them in the box was to make sure they were warm enough with highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s. Turns out, ducks are tougher than that. When I was told they really didn't need heat, they went right into their poultry house and started absolutely thriving at 2 weeks old.

Lesson learned, and its time to start another duck incubation.

Life is AMAZING. I just candled the eggs I'm incubating (which means shining a fancy flashlight against them to make the inside visible) and oh man. To see the baby ducklings moving inside is breath taking!

Just put the incubator into lockdown, meaning they will not be turned so the duckling can position itself for hatch. Humidity is also drastically increased (ducks need higher humidity than chicks to have a successful hatch).

Looking forward to seeing the fluffy duckies on the other side of the shell.

Note: this particular egg intrigued me. The duckling did not seem as developed as the others but I'm told these kind of eggs can surprise you. Let's see if the little one makes it to hatch.
