Our big guy, Rocky, tore a large part of his skin open on his chest at some point yesterday (likely on the fence) so I had to take him to the vet this morning to be stitched back together. 😞 I must say, after the wrestling match I had to get him in to the car he did surprisingly well with the people at the vet and didn't try to eat anyone. He's going to have to stay at least overnight tonight at the vet so I hope he continues being good and lets them help him. I'm really hoping the goats and chickens will be ok without him for a bit while he heals enough to go back in with them. 🙏🏼 Praying that the bear, cougar, bobcat and coyotes take at least a few nights off for my animals' sake. 🫤

Early this morning around 2am Maya was freaking out doing her "go away" bark and wouldn't leave our front steps. I looked around where I could see with a flashlight from inside the front door but didn't see anything out there so I went back to bed. This afternoon we found our Silkie chicken run like this with the lid off of the feed bin and a bag of chicken feed slashed open and dumped in the bin (my daughter had put the lid back on before I got up there to take a picture). If you look closely at the feed bin lid you can see the scratches the bear's claws made when it attempted to steal an after midnight snack. 😆 Thankfully it couldn't get through the cattle panels to eat the Silkie chickens but it sure made a mess of things. We repaired the majority of the damage, moved the feed bin, and we are hoping it doesn't tear it all apart again tonight. 🫤 Definitely never a dull moment around here, that's for sure! 😂

After four and a half years we finally had to replace the hutch I built when we first got our rabbits. On this one only the frame is wood and the cages are fully metal so they can't chew through and attempt escape anymore. The old hutch had been patched up more times than I can count with the holes they had chewed through it. 😆 They also don't have panels between them anymore so they can all see each other. Sylvie doesn't care so much but Ginger and Bun Bun love that they can sniff each other now. 😂

Hay barns are full! One step closer to being ready for winter. 😉

While feeding the goats yesterday evening I found a couple of newly hatched chicks running around without a mother. Looking around a bit I heard two more peeping in another part of the goat pen and just after that found a lone chick hiding under a pile of logs. Blaze, who we didn't even realize was missing and hoarding eggs to hatch, came out of another brush pile farther into the chicken pen with a few more chicks and we realized they all must belong to her. 😳 While trying to figure out what we should do with the abundance of babies wandering everywhere, we found one chick laying by the path super cold and not doing well and then yet another lone chick about 20 feet farther screaming for its mother. I came to the conclusion that Blaze, being a first time mama, had hatched so many babies she couldn't keep track of them all and this wasn't going to end well. The kids and I grabbed 8 of the babies (including the super cold one) and let her keep just a few hoping she'll be able to keep track of less chicks. Thankfully I was able to warm the cold one and other than being slightly smaller than its siblings it seems to be doing well now. So now we have 8 chicks in the house that I wasn't planning to have. 🤦🏼‍♀️ It also looks like most of the eggs she hatched weren't even her own. 😂 Chickens, I swear! 🙄

When you *really* don't need any more chickens...
Hawk hatched out 5 babies in May (which I took and gave to the broody silkies since the barn cat was hunting them), then 8 more in June (which I left for her because obviously she's really determined to raise babies this year 🙄). Then I found Chocolate sitting on about 20 eggs (already started developing so I just left them for her) in the goat barn. Now Mocha hatched 6 chicks when I didn't even know she was hiding eggs. 🤦🏼‍♀️ We don't need any more chickens!!! 😆

Three times in the past week a certain someone has had her head stuck in the fence. Cori is about to be wearing the stick of shame on her horns so she can't put her head through the fence anymore. 🙄

It may be cold outside, but we're definitely moving toward spring! First sunlight of the year on the solar panels! We live on the north side of a mountain so we don't get any direct sunlight from early December until late January. It's always nice to see that little reminder that the sun is coming back and the days are getting longer as well. 😁
