Our Story

We moved to the open fields of Johnston County in 2012 to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The next year we started our venture into chickens and thus began our battle with “chicken math”. It didn’t take long for us to find something special in the sweet and sometimes sassy Silkies, the social butterflies that characterize Swedish Flower Hens and the gentle giants in the LF Dark Brahmas. Our birds are pets and are given the best care possible from carefully planned predator proofing their living quarters, carefully researched feed selection and armed guarded free range time. We enjoy spending time with them, interacting with them and just watching them have a great time digging in the dirt and grass. They are fun to watch and a great hobby.

We have been very fortunate to obtain breeding stock from some of the best breeders of each of our selected breeds. We enjoy the mentoring that we have received from those breeders and strive to improve the quality and health of our birds each year. In an effort to improve as much as possible, we entered the chicken show world last year. It is fun and very helpful to see our birds next to other breeders’ birds and to hear the remarks of judges concerning our birds’ structure.

We breed for our own enjoyment as a hobby. To the best of our ability, we breed to the SOP (Standard of Perfection). We are not a hatchery. We do not breed to sell or to make money. Occasionally, we will have birds available as we cannot keep every bird we hatch. When we have something available, it is because we have determined that bird is not suited for our breeding future. It may be due to a slight imperfection such as the wrong comb, color issues, etc. In rare instances, we will have breeder quality birds available. Chicks and young juveniles are always sold straight-run (gender not determinable). The only way to determine gender of Silkie chicks is to DNA test. We do not DNA test. We will not sell just females. Once gender can be determined, known females (pullets/hens) will always be sold with a male (cockerel/cock). Around 60% of what hatches are males. We always have too many males. We will not sell known females without an accompanying male. Please do not ask us.
