So today was one of our first “controversial” decisions as homesteaders.

It’s common knowledge that when an egg has trouble or can’t hatch on its own then the chick is not strong enough to live. So in many cases, the homesteader chooses to dispatch said egg.

We chose to go against Mother Nature and help one of our Ameraucanas hatch today.

When I was a kid, we went through the incubation course with a real incubator and eggs in the classroom. I remember 8/12 eggs in our classroom incubator successfully hatched. But there was one egg where the chick had mostly hatched (its beak, legs, and other areas were out of the shell). My teacher unceremoniously threw the egg away in the trashcan WITH THE LIVE CHICK INSIDE. And told us all that it wasn’t strong enough to break the egg and therefore wasn’t strong enough to live.

It always sat with me and I still think about it to this day. I hope we can prove her wrong. I’m curious if anyone can tell who the “failed” egg is - drop a comment if you think you’re right.
