We are off the farm today but the stand is still open and full! We will be at Redmen Hall for THE ASSEMBLY at 7407 South Strain Ridge Road from noon until 5 pm. Join us for culinary art from Erika Yochum, music from Jack Carl and Claire Pendreigh and scrawly doodle art from the Lucas Lane Farmer guy. We have a rare herb plant for sale. African Nunum is an amazing African basil or Leaf basil, with a clove, oregano and camphor aromatic flavor profile. Native to Africa and Asia it is widely used as a spice, for soups and traditional dishes. We use it as an alternative pesto recipe. Teas, infusions and medicinal usages are nearly limitless. It's an annual in our growing zone, yet the potted plants will do well indoors and can be planted late May the following spring. We are selling them for $10 a piece. Rare, hard to find. Not the easiest plant to germinate, but well worth it! At our stand.

While most tomato growers have plateaued with their crops, we will be starting our second wave soon. These are Birdwalk Tomatoes, from the Birdwalk area in Central Belize. These are our favorite. We covet them. They are a large oxheart variety all meat, few seeds, with little water, delicious for slicing, sauce, paste, salsa, etc. The best flavored tomato we grow. With a bit of patience, we will start harvesting in a week or so, or when they make their minds up that they're ready. We might wrap each one in gold foil and sell them for $19.95 a lb. We should. But we won't...

Late Summer deliciousness. We have in our stand now, two new squash varieties. The first is the Pennsylvania Dutch Crookneck Squash. These seeds were obtained from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in the heart of the Amish community. This squash is a cousin to the more common Butternut Squash. However, with their long necks they provide more flesh for roasting, baking, soups, pies, etc. Wonderful flavor. Easy to process, puree and put up, or cool storage the entire squash for winter usage. The other squash is limited, but we have some for the adventurous home chefs! This is the Guatemalan Green Ayote Squash. It's a staple in everyday cooking in Central and South America. These seeds are from an Antigua, Guatemalan market sourced from an indigenous vendor. The flesh is green. It is sweet and easy to use. A simple roasting, or baking with cinnamon and brown sugar really brings out the earthy subtle flavor. Traditional soups are made with the Ayote as is a simple desert that is served.
