Roger Ridge Ranch

Roger Ridge Ranch Roger Ridge Ranch strives on providing the most all natural products possible. Animals have little human intervention and with no hormones nor antibodies.

Our page will allow you to see the ranch as it progresses. We will be able to answer questions on how we shift through old wives tales to ensure we are raising our animals as naturally as possible without risking their health. Our goal is to have lots of eggs and meat for sale here at the ranch. We are breeding Black S*x Link hens for their brown eggs, Kiko goats for their meat and Berkshire hogs

for their meat. All our chickens, goats and hogs are raised naturally on pasture. Because of our minimal intervention and feed, we are able to produce some of the best tasting eggs and meats. This does make our costs a little higher, but having eggs and meat raised right makes it worth it to us.

YOU WILL NOT BELIEVE THIS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Most Americans think of the Civil War as something in our distance past. To me, however, it is not as distant to me as it may seem to most others.

My Grandfather could remember the Civil War.

In fact he remembered the day his father left for the great fight. Well, maybe the incident was reinforced in his mind by his mother retelling it, because he was not yet four when his daddy left for service. He awoke to find his father gone and when he asked his mother where he was, he was told that Daddy has left to fight in the war. After a quick survey of the hall closet, he responded to his mother that she must be wrong because he did not take his gun.

His daddy did not need a gun; the Rev Edwin Christenbury James (1822 – 1887) served as a chaplain.

“The Independent Republic of Horry” county was isolated from the remainder of SC, the South, and the United States by a series of virtually impassable swamps. The county had very few plantations and slaves. Due to the isolation, the county was spared much of the devastation of much of the State and the South. The isolation was ended when bridges were built across the rivers and swamps in the early 1900's.

................... Introducing the Roger Ridge Ranch Caretakers .................
I have decided not to replace the managers of Roger Ridge Ranch for now. Richard Bradshaw has been involved with RRR for several years. He feeds the animals between managers and helps maintain all areas of the ranch. Rick is a vital part of the operation.

I have rented the house to a young couple, Harley Dennis and Joe Boone. It was not planned they would be involved in ranch management, but they are beginning to take over ranch responsibilities. I hope this trend continues. In the picture, Richard is in the blue shirt, Joe in the white, and Harley in the center.

Please welcome Joe and Harley to the ranch. I know you already appreciate the work Richard does.

................... Scary Stuff – Stay Close to the Plug....................
Much of my career revolved around computers. I certainly cannot represent myself as an expert, but I am knowledgeable about the subject. Perhaps the most exciting area of computer technology is Artificial Intelligence. The possibilities are virtually limitless. However, there is a very small chance that the technology could go very, very wrong.

In speaking to group of students, Russian President Vladimir Putin recently said that the country that first reaches a breakthrough in developing artificial intelligence will come to dominate the world. Some of the world’s leading technologists have issued warning about the development of AI, including Elon Musk and Stephen Hawkins

We cannot stop the work on AI, and neither should we. The possible benefits are simply too great, but we need to proceed with some caution. It is conceivable that once the first truly intelligent program is created, it could recognize its vulnerability and immediately propagate itself around the world within seconds. HAL lives !!!

It could begin controlling every aspect of our lives, including the electrical grid, the world’s military weapons, all transportation systems, Wal-Mart’s inventory system, etc., etc.

Far-fetched? Yes. Possible? No one can know for sure, but do we wish to take the chance. We should institute the same level of control we have for genetic and disease research. Overkill. Probably, but the potential dangers are just too great.

We should all watch “2001, A Space Odyssey” again and always know where the plug is located.

Roger Ridge Ranch Indian Grave

One of the stops on our Heritage Trail is an Indian grave. Today, it just appears to be a pile of rocks in the woods, but underneath that pile of stones is the remains of a very early resident of what is now Roger Ridge Ranch. We cannot be sure of the details; both the Catawba and the Cherokee lived in this area, but we believe that the grave is more characteristic of a Cherokee burial.

When a Cherokee died, the hut in which he died and all his possessions were considered unclean. The body was purified by washing it in a solution of boiled willow root. The priest ritually cleansed the house, burned or destroyed his possessions, and started a new fire in the hearth. The body was sometime buried inside the house; however, it was often buried in a shallow grave near the house. The grave was covered by rocks to prevent animals from reaching the body. Our grave is the type covered by rocks.

Can we prove it is a Cherokee grave? Unfortunately, no one who attended the burial is around to verify the burial. However, the mound of rocks is characteristic of such graves and it appears virtually identical to photos of graves verified by exhumation. I think we can be certain that this grave is authentic. We will never allow the grave to be disturbed. We consider it as a sacred burial site.

Unfortunately, the references I have found refer to the burial of males. We can only assume the females were treated in a similar manner. The Cherokees were relatively enlightened, at least compared with other tribes, with respect to women’s rights. For example, Cherokee women could own property.

.................................. Seeking the Pig Whisperer .....................................
The title of this posting is purposely misleading to draw attention. We have 24 Berkshire pigs at Roger Ridge Ranch. The four adults, a boar and three sows, are registered, and their pigs are eligible for registration. Each of the sows has a littler of pigs, with their ages ranging from one week to two months.

Unfortunately, since our last manager left, the pigs are unmanaged; they live free range in a five-acre pasture. I simply cannot manage the pigs and unless we can soon find a pig manager, I will be forced to sell them all. The little pigs are the favorite farm animal of the children who visit the ranch.

I am seeking someone to raise the pigs in a 50/50 partnership. I will furnish the pigs, the pasture, and pens. The partner will be responsible for raising and marketing the pigs. I will buy all food for the first three months. We need three well designed pens to manager the breeding, birthing, feeding and loading the pigs. These pens will cost about $5,000. I will provide the pens and additional infrastructure.

I believe the profit potential of such a partnership is very attractive and it is much preferable to having no pigs at the ranch. With the type of continuous-feeding stations I will provide, the pigs do not require daily care, but managing 400 pound hogs is not an easy task.

If you, are anyone you know, has an interest, I am prepared to talk specifics at any time.
