Zebulon Heritage Farm

Zebulon Heritage Farm We are a family farm in NE TN and we offer raw, A2A2 Jersey milk through herd shares. We also raise grass fed beef. We use no hormones. That buys you in.

Breeding registered Jerseys, farming, and growing real food is our passion. We provide fresh raw milk from our Jersey cows. Our cows live a natural healthy life on pasture 24/7. They receive a small amount of grain at milking time if they need it to maintain healthy body condition and a steady milk supply. The milk is strained and bottled in glass half gallon jars and rapidly chilled. The milk is

tested regularly to assure quality and cleanliness. And antibiotics are used only when absolutely necessary to save a cow's life or productivity. Of course, on these rare occasions the milk is then discarded for an extended period of time. In compliance with Tennessee laws, we provide the milk through a cowshare program. You buy a share of the cow(s) and then you can enjoy nutritious raw milk from a cow that you own! One share costs a one time refundable fee of $20. One share entitles you to one gallon of milk per week. If you would like more than one gallon of milk per week then you can buy more shares. If you would like less then you can buy a half share. The monthly boarding fee is $30 per share to cover the cost of feeding, milking and caring for the cows. That comes to about $7.00 per gallon of milk at a gallon a week for every week of the year (52). If you choose to leave the program I will buy your share(s) back for exactly what you paid. Initially shareholders will need to buy glass half gallon jars with plastic lids. Jars with plastic lids will be available for shareholders to buy for $3 each. We deliver in Sneedville, Treadway, Mooresburg, and Rogersville every week. If you would like to meet the cows and tour the farm you can contact me and we can arrange an appointment to do so. So I started a little thing and opened a community for learning about keeping a homestead family cow on the platform Skool.
Eventually I hope to put together programs about how to go about buying a cow, how to care for a cow, milk her, and keep her healthy as well as breeding and raising her calf.

This group is all about keeping a family cow! We share decades of experience of all things related to a homestead family cow.

Meet the Zebulon Heritage Farm herd! All registered, A2A2 Jerseys. There are a few dry cows that are not in this video since they're being kept separate, but this is most of the others.

Why use artificial insemination? (The original AI)

There are many reasons to use artificial insemination to breed a cow. For most small farms it's not practical to keep a bull. Feeding and caring for a bull full-time when he only breeds a cow one day in a year is expensive. And bulls are potentially dangerous and destructive to facilities.

Another reason to use AI (artificial insemination) to breed a cow is that any small farmer can have access to high quality genetics. We can pick out a bull that will improve the offspring of our cow. If she has a poor udder attachment, we can use a bull that will improve that in the calf.

Another reason to use AI is that we can choose sexed (gender selected) semen and that will give us a 90% to 95% chance of getting a heifer calf. Heifer calves are more valuable and no wants to constantly get bull calves.

AI is also safer for the cow. There's no risk of injury like with a live bull.

⚠️ Sometimes weird things happen. Extra teats are actually very common in cows. There are usually just one or two extras though. They are typically non functional and cause no issues.

✂️For show calves, they are usually snipped off after birth.

We don't usually need to snip them because they don't cause any bother. In the case of this heifer it was not even easy to tell which ones were the actual real ones when she was born. She's now due to have her first calf in about 5 weeks and it's become clear which teats are the real ones and which ones are extra. The extras don't look like they will be in the way or problematic.

🥥 Her name is Coconut. But I guess she identifies as a dog or pig or something? 🐖🐕 😆🤷‍♀️
