A Slightly Different Winter’s Tale

Twas near the Winter Solstice when this tale did occur
Friends, neighbors and relatives had all gathered near
To celebrate Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanza and more
Good food, great drink and fellowship was dear
Singing and dancing and presents galore
Sharing and talking and laughing out loud
The host to be sure was understandably proud
When disaster reared its ugly head
In a way no one had thought but now began to dread
The ice maker was done; it had done what it could
The coolers stood ready to do what they would
If only, if only someone had thought ahead
Cold drinks and safe food would last until bed
Midst the shocked faces and tears
Everyone realized the worst of their fears
When what to their amazement did come to the door
Chilly W***y the Penguin with the answers and more
In his flippers he held
Bagged ice that would meld
With the drinks to make them cold
And with the food it would help to stave off the mold
“Use all that you want!” he cried out loud
“Plenty we’ve got” of that he was proud
“Ready to serve you around the clock
And close by we are – just down the block”
He dropped off the ice and away he waddled
He had more to deliver before it became puddles
“To the Ice House!” he shouted as his sled flew away
“We’ve got to make more to save another day!”

A poet I'm not but the moral of this tale is clear, make sure you've got plenty of ice for your plans. We are close by in Lilburn and Snellville and are open 24 hours to help you make it through that unplanned ice oops.

The 656 Indian Trail location has been struggling to keep up with demand on this holiday weekend. It will turn back on to vend more ice at about 10:25pm. So far the Wisteria Village location is keeping up today. If you need ice for your weekend celebrations, try Wisteria Village first. We very much appreciate your business! Remember, you can pay ore but you can't buy better!

07/04/2025

Both machines are currently out of ice. Wisteria Village in Snellville will turn on about 7:30pm and Indian Trail in Lilburn will turn on about 8:30pm.

07/04/2025

The Lilburn location at 656 Indian Trail Rd is currently out of ice. It will turn back on at approximately 3:25pm. The Snellville location at 2420 Wisteria Drive just ran out and will turn back on at approximately 4:35pm.

For the more adventurous among us - Rocky Road!
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 cup sugar 2 cups whipping cream
2 cups milk 1 (1 oz) square semisweet chocolate
1 teaspoon vanilla 1 cup miniature marsh mellows
1/8 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup chopped nuts

In a large saucepan, mix cocoa and sugar. Gradually stir in milk. Stir over low heat until dissolved. Cool. Stir in vanilla, salt and whipping cream. Shred chocolate with a course grater. Stir shredded chocolate, marsh mellows and pecans into chocolate mixture. Freeze. Makes about 2 quarts.

For those folks out there that don't like peaches, and there are a few, here is Mother's Old Fashioned Strawberry Ice Cream.

3 cups fresh strawberries 2 cups Half and Half
2 eggs 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/4 cups sugar 1 cup whipping cream

Wash strawberries. Puree berries in blender. Set aside. In a large bowl beat eggs until thick and lemon colored. Beat in sugar, half and half, vanilla, pinch of salt and whipping cream. Stir in strawberries. Pour into freezer and freeze. Makes about 2 qts.
Rumor has it if you don't have fresh berries, the frozen ones will work. At least I think I remember her saying that.

It's the 4th of July and what goes better with the festivities that a fresh batch of homemade ice cream? Here are some tried and true recipes courtesy of my Mother's cook book. We'll start with some basics and grow from there. Of course, you will need extra ice and there's nowhere better to get it than the ice house. Remember, you can pay more but you can't buy better! 656 Indian Trail Rd, Lilburn and 2420 Wisteria Drive Snellville in the Wisteria Village shopping center in front of Ollie's.

Basic Vanilla

Vanilla Ice Cream
4 large eggs 1 tablespoon pure vanilla
1 cup sugar 1 1/2 quarts sweet milk
2 cans condensed milk pinch of salt
Beat eggs until thick and lemon colored. Add sugar and mix thoroughly. Add both cans of condensed milk and continue mixing. Add sweet milk and vanilla. Mix thoroughly. Freeze.

Peach Ice Cream

This one is for peach ice cream. I remember Mother's peach ice cream and it was soooooo good.

6-8 large peaches sliced
3 cups milk
2 large eggs, lightly beaten
1 (12 oz) can evaporated milk
2 1/2 cups sugar
1 (12 oz) can peach nectar

Combine 1/2 of peaches with 1/4 cup milk in blender until smooth - set aside. Repeat procedure with remaining peaches and 1/4 cup milk. Combine remaining 2 1/2 cups milk and next 3 ingredients in heavy saucepan. Cook over medium heat 8 minutes stirring occasionally. Remove. Stir in nectar and peach mixture. Pour into freezer and freeze. Makes 4 quarts.

Butter Pecan

2 tablespoons butter 2 eggs
1/2 cup coarsely chopped pecans 1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup packed brown sugar 2 cups half and half
1/2 cup water 1 cup whipping cream

In small skillet, melt butter. Add pecans. Stir over low heat until pecans are golden brown. Set aside. In medium saucepan, combine brown sugar and water. Stir over medium heat until sugar dissolves and mixture cones to boil. Stirring occasionally, simmer gently 2 mins. Set aside. In medium bowl, beat eggs until thick and lemon colored, about 5 mins. Beating constantly, pour hot brown sugar syrup in a thin stream over beaten egg yolks. Continue beating until cool and thick, set aside. Stir in vanilla, half and half, whipping cream and toasted pecans. Pour into freezer. Makes about 2 qts.

Over the course of two trips to Augusta, we took 11,000lbs of ice (over 630 bags) that we distributed. First trip we basically hit large distribution points and the last trip we hit multiple mobile home parks, small businesses, and just individuals we saw. In a few places, the power had just come back on and people wouldn't take the ice telling us to save it for those that still had no power. There still many, many people with no power but my sense is that they are onesie-twosies or small pockets here and there. It will take a while for these to be repaired as the major out of area crews appear to have been pulled to work other hard hit areas. Please continue to help your friends and neighbors as they need it.
