While I'm laid up, we decided to let our chickens be mom's and incubate some eggs, at first in the coop but freezing weather got me worried for chicks and we set up one of the girls inside, coincidentally Karen proved to be the best mom, name earned due to her following me around and always giving me judgemental looks😂. So! Tarp down, pool up, bedding in, x-pen up, and then we learned chicks can fit through the x-pen🤦♀️... K, poultry netting added. So far, despite the straw in the house. I'm preferring fall/winter chicks vs the usual spring/summer. Our original flock was raised in fall too, and I don't seem to have the same classic issues as others (reduction in lay, etc). Regardless, Karen is being a good mom, caring for her chicks, eggs, and herself. If you look closely under her wing you can see little heads popping out! These are Heinz 57 mixes (we'll love them anyway 🥰) Bielefelder x EE, BCM, PBR, and RIR. I really wish someone around here bred Bielefelder's, I'm just falling in love with this breed! Our roo has become such a sweetheart ❤️ I'd prefer to support a local farmer if anyone knows someone who breeds Bielefelders!
