Merry Christmas and happy holidays! Our family took a break from flood clean up for a quick trip to Taiwan. The land of funny signs, amazing food, and scooters galore. I’ll post flood clean up updates in the new year.

We are deeply grateful for the kind words and support that we’ve received over the last few weeks. We’ve almost reached our Gofundme goal thanks to the incredible generosity of friends near and far, and complete strangers. What an incredible gift! We’re humbled by the outpouring of support.

Some of the families in the Three Rivers RV Park next to our farm lost everything. Many of the children who live there go to school with our kids. Please consider making a donation. There are a lot of drives happening but this one provides cash assistance which feels like the best way, to me, to support right now.

We’re not the only ones in our valley who were hit hard by the flood. Please consider making a donation to Chinook Farms or volunteering to help with their clean up. They have the best beef so sign up for a beef share while you’re at it.

It is with great hesitation that I write this. Many people have reached out about ways to help. It is becoming quite clear that we are facing a difficult situation beyond anything we have ever experienced in previous flood events. This is historic. We lost about half of our stored hay for the cattle as well as 9 greenhouses used by the small farmers who rent space at Chinook Farms. We also lost our bridge coming into the farm and about 1500 pounds of meat in our walk-in freezer. I will add pictures in the comments.

Welcome to our mess. Imagine a wild drunken giant scooped up armfuls of your stuff then randomly threw piles of it everywhere, including on the blackberry covered fenceline and then decided to knock over a whole bunch of things that should never ever be flipped onto their side. Then just for fun he sprayed muddy silt onto everything from about chest height on down. That’s pretty much what we’re dealing with.

Well at least tomorrow’s flood is projected to be lower than initially predicted. More like in the annoying range and not destructive. Of course I had that false sense of hope last week when the predicted peak went down for a few hours and look how that turned out. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice…

Help our neighbor Food Bank Farm with their clean up

The historic flood of December, 2025 covered our greenhouses and equipment with 10 feet of swiftly flowing water. The current carried tons of debris that destroyed several greenhouses and scattered thousands of items. Many floating things were carried off and we will never find them. Our fence lines...

I feel nervous to share this because I want those who have lost their homes and sustained greater losses to receive support first.

There’s another flood headed our way. This is predicted to be a lot lower than the first but this is how the earlier prediction started so I’ll be watching it like a hawk.

And now, a brief glimpse of our losses. Everything in the field and in our tunnels is 100% lost. I suppose I could re-bury the garlic but it hardly feels worth the effort.

It’s a few thousand dollars covered in silt. While it’s not a massive amount of money, it’s meaningful to our little farm business and puts a very abrupt end to that part of our season.

At the peak of the flooding I received a cold call from an equipment company that I won’t name offering their services to rent us heavy equipment and dehumidifiers to “help” us with flood clean up. It was one of the most offensive and tone-deaf calls that I could have gotten in the moment. How dare you try to sell your services to me and likely others in my same situation at the height of this incredibly stressful and traumatic event. You couldn’t even wait until the water had fully receded to try to make a buck off of me? If I need you, I’ll find you. I do know how to use Google.

I understand that all businesses need to make money but if you dare call me again I’ll rip you a new one.

Pic 1: Adding insult to injury there is a large log blocking our driveway. We have the equipment to move it but it’s symbolic of how the clean up is going to go. Before we can even get started we need to clear out the unexpected things that are in the way.

Pic 2: So many animals have been affected. Those who couldn’t make it to high ground are finding shelter in trees. Lots have probably drowned. There are probably a bunch of animals in our hayloft.

There hasn’t been any sight of our barn cat yet. He’s pretty scrappy but I’m still worried that he’s MIA. 💔
