Some things don’t change. Make sure you pick enough Blueberries for the freezer- so the rest of the year your pancake mornings can look like this 😂 🫐 🥞
Unrelated- anyone know how to get dark berry stains out of jammies?

Last week we took cutting from some Bluejay variety blueberry bushes, dipped them in rooting hormone, and then rested them in some peat moss and perlite mix. Why Bluejay? It is a unique variety of blueberry that is highly resistant to both the shoot blight and the fruit infection phases of mummy berry- a major challenge for us here at . Choosing disease resistant cultivars is a major organic strategic advantage rather than choosing to spray fungicide (even organic approved fungicides). Hoping for a high success rate on the cuttings🤞🏼

New berry plants to ! We are planting a small trial plot of about 50 plants total of Cranberries! Know to love damp, acidic, boggy soil- just like our blueberries. Varieties Stevens, Pilgrim, and Ben Lear will go into the ground later this spring. Maybe you’ll see them in a few November’s from now for your Thanksgiving table!

It’s official- we have entered late season picking. What’s that mean? The berries are sweet and perfect for jams, pies, or freezer. Early and mid season ripening varieties are done. But late season varieties are hitting their stride. It’s important to find the good picking spots (follow the blue cones) and not just assume that if the closest bushes don’t have fruit that all bushes are that way! Explore the back field too!
By the way- did you know that the Costco blueberry prices are as follows:
Conventional fresh= $4.43/lb
Organic fresh= $5.76/lb
Organic frozen= $2.80/lb

At $3/lb for our fresh berries- we like our quality and value 💪

✅ certified organic
✅ supports local agriculture
✅ hand harvested (not machine picked!)
✅ picked at peak ripeness (not just when color has changed)
✅heirloom varieties
✅allows you to PARTICIPATE in the seasonality of local, fresh produce 👌

How do I know how much I am picking?

We were out picking this morning with the peaceful chirping birds. With so much ripe fruit hanging, it’s really peak picking right now.
Here’s a quick visual for what 10, 5, 1.5, and 1 lbs looks like. It took two of us about an hour to pick 10 lbs at a leisurely pace. The best conversations can happen among friends over a blueberry bush.
