Candles are not my only use for our beeswax. My first priority is the bees. Before I give them new frames to draw out, I'll add more beeswax to the frame, a few thin coats of beeswax will help the bees get these frames drawn out with new wax quickly so they can store honey or so the queen can lay eggs to expand the population of the colony 🐝🐝
Drawn comb is like gold for a beekeeper and it takes a huge amount of nectar for the bees to draw comb. It takes 8 lbs of honey for each pound of wax that the bees produce.

Are you all seeing and smelling the Black Locust trees blooming right now? The ones close to my house are just humming with bees working these flowers. Locust nectar is one of the primary nectars in our spring honey. It gives a slightly minty, light and sweet flavor.
Although black locust trees are native to north America they are also considered an aggressively invasive tree. They spread through a large root system shooting up sucker trees all around them. If you plant them in your yard (and the bees hope you do) just make sure to mow around them and you won't have any problems. Locust wood is a rot resistant hardwood, prized by wood workers and farmers for fence posts. It can be difficult to find these trees in a nursery, and if you do the INVASIVE sign might tend to scare you away.... please just remember
1. It's a native species.
2. The bees LOVE them!
3. Mowing around it will keep those sucker trees from sprouting up.

The bees (and their keepers) thank you if you are letting these trees grow!!!

Well this was a first for me. Getting ready to open up this hive when I notice this queen, hanging out on the back of the hive. Just enjoying the sun?
Last check on 5-18 revealed capped queen cells, which meant that the colony was getting ready to swarm. My first thought was she's a virgin queen, newly hatched, escaping from the other queens trying to kill her, but when I took the top off the hive she walked right in and the bees did not seem bothered by her.
So, let's just close up this box and let the bees sort out what's going to happen here. I'll be back next week to see how it went! 🐝🐝
