We are chipping away at our pre-harvest to-do list. We now have our poles and twine run around each row for support. We covered a couple of our taller varieties with net instead of twine. It helps keep them from falling in all directions.

Nature is amazing. Here are two pictures, of the same spot, seven days apart. Most plants grew 6-8 inches in one weeks time. The sun really gave them the shot in the arm they needed.

Have you seen the latest Soldotna Visitor’s Guide yet?! We were excited to see one of our customers, Pegge Erkeneff, pictured in this year’s issue. Pegge owns River Raven Sanctuary Lodge and uses our peonies at her lodge from midsummer to early fall. Those are our peonies on her lovely table. Also, our farm is listed in the Visitor Guide directory at the back of the magazine, in case visitors are looking for a peony farm to visit this summer.

We finally finished washing and drying our insulated blankets this week. It took longer than usual with all the rain and cool temps we’ve had this spring. All 150 blankets are now tucked away until it’s time to cover the field in November. Dan took down the giant clothesline last night, so we can finally use our driveway again. This is one of our hardest farm jobs, but the blankets have saved our plants during winter thaws and refreezes and also during extremely cold temps, with little snow. They are worth the work.

Today is our first 70° day of the year (actually 75°at the moment)! Woohoo! The peonies are still pretty small, but with the heat, I can almost see them grow before my eyes. I guess the mosquitoes were waiting for a warm day to hatch. They just appeared today and they’re pretty vicious.

We rarely get hail, but so far this spring, we’ve had it four times!! Since the peonies are only an inch or two tall, they haven’t been damaged. If this continues to happen once they have leafed out, they could be destroyed. We have two friends, north of Anchorage, who completely lost their peony crops, two years in a row, due to hail. I’m crossing my fingers that that doesn’t happen to us. 😬

First signs of life. It’s been such a cool spring, we are just now seeing our first peony shoots beginning to pop up (and only on a couple of varieties). If the weather doesn’t warm up, we may be in store for a very late harvest this summer.

Hi all. You might remember that we were invited by the Central Peninsula Garden Club to do a presentation about growing peonies, back in December. The presentation was just before Christmas, so some people couldn’t attend and asked if we would be willing to do our talk again in May. So, thanks to the Soldotna Library, we will be repeating our presentation on May 21st from 6-7:30. If you know someone who might be interested, please spread the word. The library has requested that people sign up ahead of time, so here’s the link. Hope to see you there!
