Loving the quiet farm life in the rural Midwest where we grow sustainably, promote biodiversity and care for our old growth forest

Persimmon harvesting and pulping time! Persimmon trees grow like a w**d here…more enough for humans and wildlife (and domestic farm life) 😏

One of life’s unexpected curve balls…
We’ve had many feral cats come and go in the middle of the night to grab some food from our working boys’ (Socks and Strat) bowls but never during the day. But this little guy showed up last week, unable to walk without falling over and just skin and bones.

Whether he crawled his way up from the woods or came down our long hilly driveway, we’ll never know, but he somehow managed to find his way into our garage and cried for help.

An emergency vet trip later and a week of ups and downs in helping him get over an ear infection, it’s good to see he put on a half pound in weight and he’s still with us.

We’ve decided to call him “Lurch”. He’s very sweet and while he’s clearly been out in the wild for a while, he had to have been around humans at some point earlier in life.

The vet’s best guess that he is 5-8 years old, and sadly found that he was shot with a BB gun at some point earlier in life. The BB shows up on an x-ray and has been there awhile.

Will he walk normal again? We hope so. We’ll see what happens in a few weeks after the ear infection clears. Meanwhile, we’re learning how to get better at giving give him oral medications and ear drops 😊

To be continued…

Hopefully we’ll have a positive update next week!

Back story on our working cats…both LOVE to hunt…mice, voles, grasshoppers, rabbits 🙌…and sadly birds, frogs, toads and skinks.

Socks (our orange one) hunts mostly to have something to play with and gets easily distracted after catching something. His brother Strat (Stratus like the cloud type) knows this, and he will patiently wait for Socks to get distracted and drop a catch. Strat will then swoop in and recatch the drop as it tries to get away.

I happened to catch part of that on video this morning…Socks caught a rabbit and was bringing it up out of the field. He then saw me and figured human attention was more exciting than the rabbit…so he drops rabbit at our doorstep, rabbit tries to scurry away and Strat is all over it.

So, Strat gets a nice meaty breakfast, Socks looks defeated and slinks behind him to go watch his brother eat 🙄

While walking our orchards this afternoon, it was surprising to see blueberries and wild black raspberries ripe already…it’s usually a June thing, not May!
So, the harvesting has begun 😋. It’s good to see a fair amount of apples and pears on our older trees, and grapes starting to form 😊

From our orchards we can see the neighboring farm’s horses in the field (they rotational graze horses, sheep, and bulls in that field).

And we added two more hives (a new apiary) this week so now we can look out our living room window and watch the girls coming and going…🐝🐝🐝

‘Tis the season for box turtle sittings in this area. Usually we see them crossing the county roads or sometimes when we hike our woods…but today one came up right outside our door 💚🐢
