https://eos.org/articles/for-the-birds-solar-panels-over-peatlands-may-increase-avian-biodiversity Our facebook feed has regular posts decrying the loss of farmland to solar panels. Solar farms are a very small portion of the annual conversion of farmland to other uses in the US, and research into agrivoltaics, combining solar panels and working farmland, shows that grazing animals and many crops can thrive under solar panels. This study is an additional possibility. Wetland loss is a major issue in Minnesota. The idea wetland restoration can be combined with solar panels for a net gain in carbon storage and wildlife habitat is exciting.

A new study finds an unusual mix of bird species thriving in a German solar park built on degraded peatland.

Several years ago we were given a large box of bees wax sheets that were meant for candle making, but they are just the right size for the frames in a bee hive. I've used up the natural colored sheets, so now the bees have designer colors for their walls. I was surprised that the cells so far are mostly red. They are reusing the existing wax to make the cell walls. You can see in the upper left that they are just starting to make their own wax.

Dahlias are in the ground! Fingers crossed. It's been sooo cold!

We are growing both double and single dahlias.

Doubles are for the humans: more petals, more frills.

Singles are more for the bugs: less petals, more pollen and nectar access!
