This is about the former Somerset Rose Nursery which is now Cichowski Farms. Home of the best Jersey Tomatoes and is a Preserved Farm.
This man was my grandfather. He was an estate gardener in New Brunswick, New Jersey, about the same time that “Plant Pat. 1” was issued in 1931 to Mr. Henry F. Bosenbery, owner of Somerset Rose Nursery in New Brunwick.
My father, who turned 14 years old in 1931, had fond memories of visits to Rutgers Gardens in New Brunswick with his father to look at plants. Dad had a rose garden in our back yard and never missed a chance to visit a public rose garden on family vacations. My grandfather must have visited Somerset Rose Nursery and chatted with Henry Bosenbery at some time, probably at some length. So of course, I am planting this plant, still easy to find, in my garden.
What was the first patented plant? More details about this rose in the comments.
