FOOD SAFETY WARNING: The mushrooms mentioned here have NOT been confirmed as edible. Do not eat or cook with wild mushrooms unless you are certain of their identification and safety.

Apparently, our yard has become a mushroom buffet.

Okay, not our buffet. And definitely not one we’re eating from.

This year around South Bend, and Indiana in general, mushrooms seem to be everywhere.

We’ve had mushrooms popping up in our yard that we’ve never seen before. Yesterday, we went on a hike and found some really interesting fungi along the trail. Different shapes, colors, textures and sizes. Some looked like they belonged on a chef’s tasting menu. Others looked like they came straight out of a sci-fi movie.

Naturally, when you think about food, the question becomes: “Can you eat that?”

That’s where we need to pump the brakes.

Wild mushrooms can be fascinating, but identification is serious business. Some are edible, some aren’t, and some can make you very sick. Poisonous species can also look remarkably similar to edible ones.

Please don’t rely on “My neighbor says it’s good,” a Facebook post, Google Lens or the idea that cooking it will make it safe. Some mushroom toxins survive cooking.

If you’re interested in foraging, become very knowledgeable about mushroom identification before deciding to eat or cook with wild fungi. Learn from experienced foragers, reputable resources and people with expertise in mycology.

And remember: “Not edible” doesn’t automatically mean “poisonous.” Some fungi simply aren’t suitable for eating, while others can cause serious illness.

Our approach is simple: Photograph it. Study it. Learn what it is. Don’t eat it unless you’re absolutely certain it’s safe.

The mushrooms in our yard and those we found hiking are staying right where we found them.

There’s something pretty amazing about an entire fungal ecosystem quietly doing its thing beneath our feet.

Go outside. Look down. Take pictures. Be curious.

Just remember: Not everything growing in the yard is an ingredient.

First time trying rabbit, and I have to say… this was the perfect introduction.

The rabbit, slow-cooked with 40 cloves of garlic, was incredibly tender and packed with rich, savory flavor. If you’ve ever been hesitant to try rabbit, this is the dish that might change your mind.

On the side, we had shredded Brussels sprouts with bacon and wild rice. Simple, comforting, and the perfect complements to the meal.

Sometimes the best dining experience isn’t at a restaurant. It’s a home-cooked meal, a cozy night in, and a good movie to end the evening.

Have you ever tried rabbit? If so, what’s your favorite way to prepare it? 🐇🧄🍽️

Some places serve incredible food. Others serve history with every meal.

After a long day (yesterday), we stopped into Café Navarre in downtown South Bend for what was supposed to be a quick drink. Instead, we ended up sharing a couple of dishes in one of the city’s most beautiful historic buildings. Originally home to the First National Bank, this Art Deco landmark is tied to the John Dillinger era, when the bank was among those targeted during the notorious robbery spree of the 1930s. Today, the only thing worth stealing is another bite from your dining partner.

Since we hadn’t planned on dinner, we intentionally shared our plates, so our portions were smaller than a full entrée.

🥗 Beet Salad – Red and golden beets, arugula, feta, pepitas, orange, and white balsamic. Fresh, colorful, and perfectly balanced.

🍝 Gnocchi – Pillowy gnocchi in a rich four-cheese fondue, topped with shaved black truffle and chives. Rich, comforting, and packed with flavor.

Dessert, however, was every person for themselves.

🍋 Lemon Posset Brûlée – Creamy lemon custard with toasted sugar, butter cookie crumble, and raspberry basil sorbet. Bright and refreshing.

🍫 Sundae Fundae – Chocolate cake, berry preserves, brown butter, and caramel gelato. Decadent without being overwhelming.

Café Navarre continues to be one of South Bend’s premier dining destinations, combining exceptional cuisine, outstanding service, and a remarkable piece of local history. It’s well worth a visit.

Not every spritz wins me over… but the Cucumber Lavender Spritz at rockyrivertapandtable absolutely did.

I stopped in before another event for a quick cocktail, and even though it isn’t listed on their current menu, I’m glad I took the recommendation. It was light, crisp, refreshing, and perfectly balanced. The cucumber kept it cool and clean while the lavender added just enough floral flavor without overpowering the drink. It was exactly what I wanted on a scorching Indiana summer day.

Rocky River Tap and Table is known for its farm-to-fork approach, partnering with local farmers, brewers, and winemakers to create fresh, seasonal dishes in a relaxed atmosphere. That same attention to quality came through in this cocktail, making it a pleasant surprise that I’ll definitely order again if it’s available.

If you’re looking for something refreshing to beat the heat, ask if they can still make the Cucumber Lavender Spritz. Sometimes the best drinks aren’t even on the menu.

❤️❤️❤️

Some evenings are less about taking the perfect photo and more about enjoying the experience—and this wine tasting at Brasserie 23 in Granger was exactly that.

While I completely forgot to snap a picture of the food, the thoughtfully curated wine selection more than made the evening memorable. Brasserie 23, in partnership with Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits, showcased an elegant lineup of wines that complemented each course beautifully and highlighted just how impactful a well-executed pairing can be.

A few pours stood out above the rest. The Simonnet-Febvre Brut Crémant Rosé was bright, crisp, and beautifully effervescent with delicate berry notes that made it an ideal summer sparkling wine. The Camille Hugel Classic Riesling offered vibrant acidity balanced by refreshing citrus and stone fruit flavors, making it incredibly approachable and food-friendly. To finish the evening, the Busnel Calvados Fine delivered a warm, smooth apple character with subtle oak and spice, providing a refined ending to an exceptional tasting.

Events like this are a reminder that wine is at its best when it’s shared over great conversation, thoughtfully prepared food, and an atmosphere that encourages you to slow down and enjoy each pour. Thank you to Brasserie 23 and southernglazerswineandspirits for putting together such an enjoyable evening.

🍷 Cheers to discovering new favorites!

📍Saugatuck, Michigan called, and we answered. 🌊🦞

One of our stops was Butler Restaurant, where we couldn’t pass up their famous Lobster Roll. Served on a buttery toasted roll and piled high with tender, sweet lobster, it’s the kind of lakeside meal that just feels like summer. Paired with waterfront views and a relaxing atmosphere, this was the perfect way to kick off our Saugatuck adventure.

If you’re looking for fresh seafood, coastal flavors, and a laid-back dining experience while visiting Michigan’s west coast, this spot is definitely worth adding to your list.
