Farm stand restock and tour!

Got the rows prepped between the Apple trees and winter squash and pumpkins planted! This is an example of alley cropping, where you grow annuals between rows of trees until the tree canopy fills in.

I use the rotary plow attachment on the walk behind tractor to break new ground in the grass. It flips the sod over and creates a nice fluffy bed to plant into.

Also, apparently field stone reproduces in our soil 😂😂

Had some help restocking flowers at the farm stand this evening. This friendly lady is Billina and if you’re ever greeted by a chicken when you pull up, it’s probably her!

Dear local friends of Barn Swallow Farm,

We need your support!

We are applying for agritourism zoning at the farm to be able to host small events on site (think farm-to-table dinners, graduation parties, family gatherings, small affordable weddings, that sort of thing). We are making plans that keep farming as our primary business, while adding some new opportunities. We are also taking great care to move forward in consideration to our neighbors.

This coming Tuesday, the entire St. Joseph County Council will vote on the zoning variance. If you live in St. Joseph County, please consider supporting us in one of these ways:

1) Sign our petition (linked below).

2) Write an email directly to your county council member to show your support. Can’t find the words? Email us for a draft of how to start.

3) If you can, show up in person at 6 PM in the County Council Chambers on July 28! Having a small crowd of Barn Swallow Farm friends will make our community support evident as county council members cast their votes (and will lend us some emotional support as well!). Please RSVP so we know if you plan to attend and can keep an eye out for you.
