If you ask any Nepalese what their favorite food is, majority will tell you “MOMO” without any hesitation. Just how popular is Momo in Nepal? Let’s put it this way, there are more Momo shops in Kathmandu, Nepal than Starbucks and McDonald’s combined in New York City. You get the point. Basically, Momo is the unofficial national food of Nepal. It is more so true within the Sherpa communities in particular. Momo is a Nepalese version of dumplings. It is thickly wrapped in flour dough with flavorful fillings of minced meats and vegetables served steamed or fried. It is a comfort food made during special gatherings for guests. Momos are more than just food for Sherpas. It is a symbol of camaraderie, of coming together as a family and community, as well as an expression of love and appreciation towards each other while sharing a healthy and flavorful dish. Ever since Nepalese started to immigrate to the United States, Momo has been one of the most popular items on the menu, during parties and gatherings. People that have not seen each other in months come together to share stories and catch up with each other while making momos. Momos can be made with different fillings such as Beef, Vegetable, Chicken, etc. The most popular ones are Beef and Vegetable Momos.
