Ohio’s Grand River Valley Wine Region is making headlines after the conclusion of the 20th Annual San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, the largest competition of North American wines. The ‘Chardonnay $10.00-$13.99’ category is one of the toughest brackets and Debonne Vineyards, located in Madison, Ohio, took grand prize with a Best in Class for their 2017 Unoaked Chardonnay. Judge Mike Dunne had this to say: “Proof that Chardonnay doesn’t need to be fermented or aged in French oak to yield a wine layered with ripe tropical fruit and an underpinning of complementary earthiness. The only Chardonnay to qualify for the final sweepstakes round at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.” Not only does a phenomenal Chardonnay not need French Oak, it doesn’t need to come from California. This Ohio wine soared above the primarily West Coast competition. This is a benchmark accomplishment for winemaker, Michael Harris, the entire team at Debonne Vineyards, the Grand River Valley and Ohio wines. We can only speculate what lays in store for this flourishing wine region as the phenomenal 2019 harvest begins to develop into the next award-winning vintage.
