Chickens, guineas, turkeys, ducks, and geese are all natural foragers. If they come across ticks, insects, larvae, or other small moving things while scratching and exploring, they may eat them.

The real question is how much of a difference they make from one yard, pasture, or setup to the next.

Some poultry keepers swear their flock helps. Others say they barely notice a change.

What has your experience been? Have your birds helped with ticks around your property?

Breed Spotlight: The Silkie Chicken 🐣

This adorable "furry" chicken is popular for a reason! They have many unique traits that make them stand out, and come in all sorts of colors. We sell baby silkie chicks in the colors black and white.

Some cool traits that silkies have:

🦴 Black bones, muscle, and skin, thanks to a genetic trait called fibromelanosis. This is the same trait that the Ayam Cemani breed possesses.

🪶 "Furry" feathers that feel like fur or silk. Their feathers are barbless, and lack the structure that gives feathers their smooth appearance. Barbless feathers make silkies look fluffy.

🥾 Feathered feet. This breed is booted, meaning that they have feathers that cover their legs and feet.

🧢 Head crest feathers. Silkies have a prominent, fluffy "pom pom" of feathers on their heads.

Are there any unique traits that your silkies have?

What is a brooder plate and how do you use it?

A brooder plate is basically a heated "roof" that chicks sit under to stay warm, just like they would with a hen.

IMPORTANT: If the brooder room is unheated (like a garage or barn), you may need extra heat. This is because chicks outside of the plate can lose body heat quickly. Aim for 65°-75°F in the rest of the brooder.

To use it:

🕦 Set it up beforehand so that it has time to warm up.

➡️ Place it in a corner of the brooder with food and water close by.

💧 Chicks should drink water before being introduced to the brooder. This is especially important for chicks that have been shipped.

🐣 Introduce the chicks to the brooder by gently placing them underneath it.

🐔 The brooder plate is at the perfect height when chicks can touch the plate with their backs.

Slightly tilting the plate is a great option & lets the chick decide what height it wants to be at.

🔁 Check on the chicks to make sure they are going under the plate by themselves.

What is this bag of green stuff we add to some of our baby poultry orders?

It's an electrolyte-enriched feed topper meant to be given to baby chicks and turkeys when they first enter the brooder. It's hydrating, and helps them recover from their journey!

We've found that day-old chicks and turkey poults are very attracted to AquaStart, and seem to prefer it over chick feed without it. We like it because it helps to prevent dehydration while encouraging chicks to forage and discover food.

Adding a feed topper to your chick raising plan is one way to help give your chicks a boost.

If you've ever wondered what all that peeping means, here are five common chick sounds and what they tell you.

1. Quiet, rhythmic chirping
🐣 They are comfortable and content. You will see them walking around, eating, or exploring.

2. High-pitched trill bursts
❄️ They are getting cold or already cold. You may see chicks huddling together, shivering, or hunching up.

3. Loud, sharp cheeping that doesn't stop
🚨 This is a sign of stress. They typically make this noise after being separated from the group, or are cold, hungry, thirsty, or tired.

4. Fast, low chitter, or a "brr" sound
⚠️ This is an alert call. They think there may be danger (these chicks were alerting to cars passing by). The chicks may freeze, crouch low, por scatter as they watch what's going on.

5. Short, rapid chitter
🫤 They are unsure or a little uneasy. This can happen when they see something new or unexpected, try a new treat, or get picked up.

Have you heard any of these noises from your chicks?

If the Asher Grey isn't on your radar yet, it's worth adding to your list.

Its black head and deep, dark features gradually fade into a smooth slate grey body, creating a distinct, eye-catching look. Feather color can range from a lighter grey to a deeper slate, depending on the bird.

Calm and friendly, the Asher Grey chicken breed fits right into any beginner backyard flock or homestead. It's also cold hardy, making it a dependable choice for flocks in cooler climates. With an average of 280-300 large brown eggs per year, it's a strong, consistent layer.

The Asher Grey chicken is available as day-old chicks from Myers Poultry.

Wondering how high to set your heat lamp for a chick brooder?

A thermometer is important for checking temperature, but your chicks' behavior is often the best real-time indicator of whether the heat lamp needs to be raised or lowered.

If the lamp is too low (too hot):
Chicks may avoid the light, spread along the edges of the brooder, or form a ring just outside of the warmest area.

If the lamp is too high (too cold):
Chicks will crowd tightly together under the heat source and may hesitate to move away to eat or drink.

If the lamp is just right:
Chicks move freely around the brooder. Some will rest under the warmth, while others explore cooler areas comfortably.

It is important to provide a temperature gradient so chicks can regulate their own comfort.
