Here are a few tips from the State of Michigan regarding the outbreak of Cyclospora. Please be safe and cook any produce that you can and thoroughly rinse what you can't.

Michigan health officials continue to investigate an increase in cyclosporiasis cases across the state. As of July 4, 2026, no specific produce grower, supplier, or type of produce has been identified as the source of the outbreak.

You can help protect yourself and your family by:

• Washing all fresh fruits and vegetables under clean running water, even if you plan to peel them.

• Cooking foods to at least 158°F (70°C), which kills Cyclospora.

• Contacting your health care provider if you experience symptoms such as ongoing diarrhea, loss of appetite, bloating, or stomach discomfort.

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) continue to investigate the outbreak.

With all of the food safety precautions going around, we wanted to give you some fruit washing advice.

Option 1: Water alone is better than nothing-
Hold fruit under cool running tap water. Rub the skin gently with fingers.
The friction and water physically wash away surface contaminants.

Option 2: Best for Firm or Waxed Fruit-
Baking Soda: 1 tablespoon of baking soda to 1 gallon of cool water.
Submerge fruit and let soak for 10 minutes.
Rinse thoroughly to remove baking soda residue which might leave a salty taste.
Baking soda breaks down pesticides and removes wax

Option 3: Best for Berries-
Vinegar: 1 part distilled vinegar to 3 parts water in a bowl
Gently move the fragile berries in the solution for exactly 2 minutes. They can absorb the vinegar if in solution too long.
Rinse thoroughly in fresh cold water.
Vinegar kills mold spores and bacteria and will extend shelf life.

Facts about Blueberries and Springtime in Michigan!

Blueberries are starting to wake up from the winter dormancy now and will soon be producing flowers. Farmers hope at the flowering stage that the weather holds above 32 degrees F because a Blueberry Bush is the most vulnerable to frost damage at this point.

Early Spring Planting is best for new blueberry bushes because it allows the roots to establish before the summer heat.

Pruning is done right before the blueberry bush wakes up from dormancy. While still dormant weak and dead branches can be trimmed from the plant allowing the plant to focus nutrients where they need to be when it does wake up.

Pollination is always great for any plant but really helps get a bigger yield from the blueberry bushes...which is why in a couple more weeks we will have bee deployment!!! We love our bees!!
