🥁We have to take a moment to mention how much we appreciate our big guy. Our 3-year-old calls him "Glutesies" (and if you laugh, boy will she give you a stern look). So Glutesies (I had every intention of giving him an elegant name) is a polled White Dexter bull. Something very special about him is that all of his calves will be white with colored points like him. It's a thrill to wait for those gorgeous babies to come this year!🐮

🍑Peach has let us know that the time is almost here for her first calf to arrive🐮

When we bought Peach, the person that had her did not realize she was so far along in pregnancy. They thought she was bred in the fall for a summer calf. So, this is a happy surprise for us to have a calf joining us this time of year.

Peach is a Dexter heifer with a cute top-knot of hair on her head. She is very laid back and gentle.

She is bred to a big black Dexter bull named Big George.

We can't wait to show you all the baby when he or she arrives 🥰

For the good of humanity!

There's a lot wrong with the world right now.
But one thing the world is getting right - people are realizing that what women really want on these special occasions is something lasting. Something to remind her of your love year after year. Something... It's a cow.

I have no ulterior motives in posting this.

But if my man happens to see this, I do have a list of acceptable options. Or you can check my search history.

We are still learning about Dexter cattle, and they are a really unique breed. Ivy, pictured, was born in November. In the last picture, you can see just how tiny she was! She looked like a little cow pie! We bought her mother as a young heifer, and while we knew she may have been bred, we didn't know she would have a calf so soon. But, it was beautiful to see how hardy and adaptable these cattle are. The little one was born without assistance, and momma Hannah knew just what to do.

Today I finally asked a couple questions to Google that have been on my mind. I was worried something was wrong with little Ivy. She has some skin under her belly, along with a tuft of hair, that makes most people think she's a bull at first glance. On top of that, she has a "dewlap," loose skin under her jaw, that doesn't look like other calves I've seen.

Well, come to find out, this loose skin is a somewhat desirable breed characteristic. "While it is often just a normal feature, some breeders note that, like other breeds with loose hide, this feature might be linked to a tendency for faster weight gain."

I was relieved to see the below information, and also appreciated the fact that Dexter cattle are truly genetically distinct from other breeds.

This is one of the reasons we love .
As far as we know, Peach has never had a rope or halter on. Her previous owner did not know her breeding date, and recently, her udder is beginning to show more prominently. So, we decided to move her up to a pen that will be easier for us to access when she calves. A little bucket of grain and a rope, and she happily plodded along, away from her buddies, to a new spot.
Having cattle that you can handle on your own makes ALL the difference.

Just glad they're not our cows 😌

Just another night in Culpeper 🐮

Deputy Heddings had an interesting call response during a recent night shift. Two groups of livestock roughly totaling 40 cows had escaped from their pasture.

Luckily, Heddings “moonlights” as a cowboy 🤠… get it?… moonlight… night shift… never mind 😐

The cows are fine.
