What do you call a dirt nerd? Our favorite kind of person! Ok, they are technically called “agronomists” but we love them because their passion is healthy soil. We dug deep into the dirt at the new farm this past week with Doug from the Spurt Industries Thrive Agronomy Program. Doug dug, touched, smelled and tasted (yes tasted!) our soil all over the farm to help us understand the various types of soil and the existing biology. Once he tests it at the lab, we’ll discuss ways to maintain and improve the health of the soil as we start farming it (which makes for healthy animals and nutritious food!). Doug’s passion for all things dirt was so inspiring and he had so many great suggestions. An agronomist is a valuable partner for organic farmers like ourselves who are looking to farm in ways that nurture health in the plants, the animals and the soil - and ultimately in us!

Tell them Guernsey Gold 👍

It’s definitely on trend at our farm as we continue to breed Guernsey goats, a rare dairy breed with the tastiest milk and the sweetest nature.

Originally from the Isle of Guernsey in England, this breed was recently accepted into the ADGA and we couldn’t be more thrilled to help share this breed with more homesteaders and breeders.

Reach out to get on the waiting list for our 2027 kidding season!

Designing for a farm is not for the faint of heart! Wells, hydrants, electrical, plumbing, pastures, barn, fencing - the list is long and challenging! We are so grateful for our experienced contractor, Drew Duhn, owner of briarstone_construction to guide us. Having some experience (aka years of trial and error!) under our belts help us to know what we want and don’t want at the new farm. It’s an exciting challenge even though our brains are on overload sometimes! 🤯🤯🤯

This is what rotational grazing looks like. Moving fences almost daily to give our animals small cells of fresh pasture grass.

Yes, it’s more work and yes, our animals don’t like waiting. But it’s what’s best for their health and what’s best for the pastures.

Rotating gives pastures time to regrow after grazing keeping it lush and healthy and full of delicious nutrition.

Our manicures don’t require an appointment but they are an important part of our animal care routine.

Ruminants require regular hoof trimming to keep their feet in good working condition and pain-free. As livestock farmers, we take the husbandry of our animals seriously and do our best to give them the best life we can…though we do draw the line when they ask for colored nails 🤣
