Our respiratory systems are working overtime right now to filter out an environment that is shifting faster than we are.

We don’t have to just suffer through it. Herbalism gives us incredibly practical tools with the plants that grow all around us.

Next week Monday (just a few days from now), I’m teaching a live online class focused on respiratory and nervous system health for our current climate reality. We’re going to cover specific herbs for lung and sinus support (matching the herb to the actual tissue state, not just guessing!), mental health under environmental stress, and exactly what you need in your home apothecary to be prepared.

St. John’s Wort is a powerful herbal ally, but it’s not an herb to reach for just because you’ve heard it’s “good for depression.”

Please join me in congratulating the 2026 High Summer Apprentices on completing their program! We celebrated with a hike up Wantastiquet to visit the American Chestnuts, then presented final projects— elaborate, complex, and sometimes magical materia medica, a corresponding garden plan, and a glossary of herbal action terms—with the river valley spread out below us. It was a beautiful day, the perfect culmination of our summer together. I will miss having you here every week but I look forward to watching you grow as herbalists!

Burdock (Arctium lappa) is a profound, cooling plant ally. It is one of my absolute favorites for gently clearing heat, supporting the liver, and soothing stagnant, congested skin. But because it is such a robust, earthy root, a poorly made tincture can easily become a slimy or gritty experience.

We so often think of herbs strictly for physical ailments (like a cough, a scrape, an upset stomach) but their emotional and energetic medicine is just as profound. Sometimes, the most powerful thing a plant can do is simply help us soften.

Some seasons of life ask us to be strong for so long that we forget what it feels like to soften. We hold our breath, tighten our shoulders, and carry the weight of the world without realizing it.

Plants have a beautiful way of meeting us exactly where we are. Whether you need to loosen your grip on perfectionism (looking at you, Blue Vervain) or you just need the energetic equivalent of a warm, comforting hug (hi, Linden), there is an herbal ally waiting to support you.

Which of these comforting plant friends are you needing the most right now? Let me know in the comments! 👇

If you’ve only ever thought of Hibiscus as that one ingredient that makes summer iced tea bright red, you are missing out on SO MUCH MAGIC. This is one of the absolute hardest working plants you will meet!
