Our sweet pumpkin!

She had her baby (almost a month ago 🙈). I have been in the zone tending to baby and milking like crazy. Everyone is settling in the routine. The baby ended up being a bull calf and a brown Swiss… despite me believing it was going to be a full Jersey heifer! Pumpkin is a full Jersey cow, a full Jersey heifer would have been more valuable to us. I couldn’t help but be a little disappointed, but I’m happy he is healthy and they both have done so well!

I so happy to have milk for our family again, and the endless cream for my coffee! Dairy cows are so much work, likely one of the more time consuming things I do, but they are worth their weight in gold. She is the queen of the farm! She not only feeds our family, but the chickens and pigs as well. Any of the skim milk (milk left after I take all the cream), goes to the chickens or pigs, which really does help cut down on feed costs.

She is the sweetest cow I have ever been around, hence her name, sweet as pumpkin pie! I genuinely love the time I spend with her, she is part of the family! Congratulations to our girl and her sweet calf ❤️

A year’s worth of work!

I keep saying, “A year’s worth of work we do in the summer.” A year’s worth of homegrown food preserved and tucked into the basement. A year’s worth of pasture that we turn our livestock on to consume and then make hay on the rest to preserve food for them. A year’s worth of soybeans and wheat planted, tended, and harvested.

We grow and raise a year’s worth of food, for our family, for yours, and for the livestock in what feels like the short seasons of spring and summer.

If you’ve asked me lately how things are going, you probably get the answer of “we are tired”. Adjusting to life with 2 kids in this season of growing, raising, preserving. But gosh as this season is nearing its end, I feel so thankful and grateful. I have a basement full of canned food, freezers full of pasture raised meat, barns full of hay, and 2 kids running wild through it all.

You may not see much of me here in the summer time, but just know that we are here doing our best to raise the best for you! ✌🏻
