雖經過處理,自來水中還是會含少許懸浮物(suspended solids)及溶解物(dissolved solids)。自來水廠經過很多手續將懸浮物降到最低,再加氯除去細菌及病毒(其實幾乎是零)。小時在台灣家人都會煮沸水再喝,感覺較衛生。其實煮沸水只能殺死細菌(剛提到水廠已用氯殺死微生物了),及揮發水中殘餘的氯。所有的溶解物及懸浮物還是一樣在水中。美國的水不同第三國家的水,因水中沒有微生物,所以不須用煮沸的方式來除去水中的微生物。煮沸水是多此一舉,而且若水中合有有害人體的污染原,煮沸水只會讓污染原更濃縮。

至於RO水為何較好?因RO系統利用Reverse Osmosis membrane (逆滲透薄膜)的技術一並將水中100%的懸浮物(包括細菌及病毒)及超過90%的溶解物去除,所以RO系統生產的水接近純水。記得5年前Flint, Michigan的自來水含鉛的事件嗎?煮沸水無法除去水中的鉛,唯一的方法是用RO 系統去除掉鉛。
