After the April frost, I said this definitely wasn't going to be a bumper crop year.  Well, it wasn't intentional, but I lied...

Apparently, the trees didn’t get the memo. We aren’t just having a "good" year—we’re looking at a massive bumper crop, undoubtedly the largest in the short history of HGO.

Because the trees are over-performing, we’re out here doing the opposite of what you’d expect: we’re actively removing fruit from the trees. We have to "hand-thin" the clusters for three important reasons:

Fruit size suffers: Too much competition for resources means no "big" apples.

Flavor suffers: We want the tree to focus its sugar on the winners, not spread it thin across tons of mediocre apples.

Next year is at risk: too many fruit = too much gibberellin (a natural plant hormone) that inhibits flower bud development for next year's crop. We’re thinning now to ensure we see you again in 2027!

Additionally, as the apples continue to size and gain weight, limb breakage could be a problem.

A few months ago we were counting frost damage. Now we're counting apples. And that's a problem we're happy to have. 🍎

Check out the video to see the method of hand thinning we use to select the "King Fruit" in the center and remove the laterals.

Is the unthinkable happening? 🍎✨

Back on April 21–22, HGO took it on the chin from a deep freeze that dropped temperatures to 22°F. For a moment, it looked like we might be headed for a first-round knockout.

But we weren’t ready to stay down...

There was no crying in our beer at the bar like Hank Williams sang about. Instead, we got back in the fight. We leaned on every bit of horticultural knowledge we had to try to resuscitate those damaged flower buds and set a crop. It involved supplying the essential nutrients and growth promoting signals the newly fertilized seeds would normally provide themselves, but in this case they couldn’t. It’s kind of like a blood transfusion.

And now… it appears to be working. 💪

The trees are fighting back by setting fruit, and it’s looking more and more like HGO will be open for business come September.

There’s no doubt in my mind that all the prayers, positive energy, and good vibes you all sent to me and this little orchard made a huge difference. I carried that hope with me every step I took through these rows after the frost event, and I’m pretty sure the trees felt it too. They knew you were rooting for them.

We’re not completely out of the woods yet, but right now things are looking pretty darn good.

Thank you for standing with us. We’ll keep posting updates as the season progresses.

Crop Update — and its a tough one...

The bad news: Hidden Gem Orchard was hit with a devastating freeze the night of April 20/21. The lowest part of the orchard dropped to 22.4°F, with most areas bottoming out around 25°F—cold enough to do serious damage.

To assess the impact, we dissect the flowers—both open and unopened—and examine the reproductive tissue.

As shown in the photo:

• The flower on the left is brown inside → the tissue is dead and will not produce fruit.
• The flower on the right is green in the center → still viable, still has a chance to become an apple.

Right now, I’m estimating 80–90% bud mortality.

Damage varies widely depending on variety, stage of development, and location. Cold air settles in the low spots, so trees higher up the hillside fared better.

The good news: apple trees naturally produce far more flowers than needed. Typically, a full crop can be achieved when only 5–10% of the flowers set fruit.

While a bumper year is out of the question, I’m cautiously optimistic we’ll still have something. It’s going to take a few more weeks to understand what that really looks like.

No doubt—HGO took it on the chin. Mother Nature landed a heavy punch.
But we’re not out of the fight - yet.

Thank you to everyone who reached out, prayed, and checked in. It was cold and dark out there that night—but the support coming in on social media made it feel like I wasn’t alone.

I’m not in the hospital waiting room anymore. Now it’s about helping the patient recover—and hoping for the best possible outcome.

Even a partial crop this year will feel like a win.

I’ll post updates as we learn more.

Tonight could decide our entire season…

Flower development is running two weeks ahead of schedule. The flowers are just beginning to open. It’s the most beautiful… and most dangerous moment of the year for an apple grower. Fruit development is imminent, but it also means a frost can steal the whole crop.

Tonight, we’re facing that risk…

And there’s no backup plan.
No chance for a second bloom.
No replanting like an annual crop.
If they freeze—it’s game over for the season.

So tonight, I’m out here in the orchard.

It’s that hospital waiting room feeling. You sit. You watch. You wait.
Knowing there’s nothing you can do—but there’s nowhere else you’d rather be when something you care about is on the line.

I’ll be here all night—watching the thermometer, checking the trees, hoping for just enough warmth… just enough luck.

Hoping these little buds make it through.

Please keep us—and all the tree fruit growers across the Northeast—in your thoughts tonight, friends. 🍎 🍏

What if you could prune 4,000 trees in half the time?

We’ve made up a lot of lost pruning time thanks to some great friends in the industry.

Steve and Ingrid McMenamin were kind enough to lend us their Revo platform—and it’s been a total game changer.

No more climbing ladders to reach the tops of 4,000+ trees. The Revo is self-propelled, auto-steers down the rows, and has cut our pruning time by more than half.

Sometimes it’s the right equipment—and the right people—that make all the difference.

Huge thank you to Steve and Ingrid!

What a winter! ❄️ Some sections of the road leading up to the orchard had snow drifts over 4 feet!

Last weekend we finally regained access thanks to a couple of bucket loaders and the help of Brian Kristy and Ben Platt.

The good news is that the trees are doing well. Snow cover actually helps fruit trees by acting as a natural insulating layer that protects the roots and prevents extreme swings in soil temperature.

Dormant apple trees are very winter hardy—many varieties can tolerate −30°F or lower. However, the roots and rootstock are less tolerant of those extremes. Damage usually occurs not during consistently cold winters, but during winters with large temperature swings, especially mid-winter warm spells that can cause trees to deacclimate too early.

We lost some pruning time this winter, but we’ll be working hard to catch up. Spring will be here before you know it!! 🌳✂️🍎

Did you know snow can actually help protect apple trees in winter?

It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of my sister Cindy. From the day I opened the farm stand in 2021, she was there—running it, shaping it, and welcoming everyone with kindness, humor, and care. Cindy showed up every weekend without missing a single day over the past 4.5 years until health problems caused her to step down in early October.

Cindy wasn’t just managing the stand; she was the heart of it. She helped turn an idea into a real, working orchard business and kept me centered when at times I had doubts. Hidden Gem Orchard would not be what it is today without her dedication, reliability, and love for this place and the people who visited it.

To the many customers who knew her, talked with her, and were welcomed by her week after week—thank you for being part of her world. Her favorite part of the job was the camaraderie she shared with so many of you.

Cindy, this place carries you. You are deeply missed, and will forever be part of this orchard. 🍎❤️

Visiting hours will be held on Saturday, February 7th, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Munson-Lovetere Funeral Home, 2 School Street, Woodbury, CT. A dedication will take place at 12:30 p.m. Anyone who would like to pay their final respects is welcome.

Open tomorrow 11/26 from 9 AM to 4 PM. If you ordered a pie, the pickup time is from 11 AM until 4 PM.  Lots of apples are available for your Thanksgiving deserts and stuffing. Yes, I said stuffing. Try adding a cup of minced Ashmead's Kernel in with your veggie sautee to soften them up.  It adds great flavor to the stuffing without too much sweetness.  Best stuffing I ever made... 🍎 + 🍗 = 😀
