What’s the difference between a water softener, carbon filter, and reverse osmosis?

A lot of homeowners hear these terms… but don’t really know what each one actually does.

Here’s a simple breakdown 👇

💧 Water Softener

👉 Handles hardness (calcium & magnesium)

• Stops white buildup on faucets & showerheads
• Protects water heaters & appliances
• Helps soap lather better
• Extends the life of plumbing

🌿 Whole House Carbon Filter

👉 Improves water quality throughout the home

• Reduces chlorine (pool smell)
• Improves taste & odor
• Filters certain chemicals
• Better for skin, hair, and overall use

🚰 Reverse Osmosis (RO)

👉 For drinking water only

• Removes dissolved contaminants
• Reduces TDS (total dissolved solids)
• Produces clean, high-quality drinking water
• Installed at the sink or fridge line

🧠 Simple way to think about it:

• Softener = protects your home
• Carbon = improves your water quality
• RO = gives you clean drinking water

💡 Every home is different — some people need all three, some only need one or two depending on their water.

If you’ve ever wondered what your home actually needs, it all starts with a water test 👍

Do you ever notice a chlorine smell in your water?

In towns like Southington, water is treated with disinfectants like chlorine to kill bacteria and keep it safe.

That’s a good thing 👍
But here’s what most people don’t realize…

Over the years, levels can fluctuate — especially in the summer months, when higher doses are often used to control bacteria in warmer conditions.

When chlorine reacts with natural organic material in the water, it can form byproducts (like chloroform compounds) — and that’s where taste, odor, and long-term concerns come in.

You might notice:
• A “pool-like” smell
• Dry skin or hair
• Strange taste in drinking water

This doesn’t mean your water is “unsafe” — but it does mean there’s more in it than just clean H₂O.

💧 The question is — are you removing it before it enters your home?

Whole-home carbon filtration can reduce chlorine and improve water quality for your entire house, while systems like reverse osmosis can improve drinking water even further.

Every home is different though.

👉 The only way to know what’s actually in your water is to test it.

If you’re curious what your chlorine or overall water quality looks like, feel free to PM or text 860-302-0036

Southington Homeowners — Quick Question

Do you see white buildup around your faucets, showerheads, or fixtures?

That white crust you see is usually caused by hard water minerals (calcium and magnesium).

But here’s the real question:
Do you want to solve it? And remove it from your home?

Hard water buildup doesn’t just show on faucets — it can also build up inside:

• Water heaters
• Dishwashers
• Washing machines
• Pipes and appliances

If you’re curious what your hardness levels and TDS numbers look like, I offer local water testing so you can see exactly what’s in your water.

Message me or text 860-302-0036 if you want to check your water.

Southington homeowners

I came across a video of a water heater opened up in a hard water area, and this is what mineral buildup from calcium can look like over time.

When hardness is high (Southington is often 35–50 grains), that calcium doesn’t disappear — it builds up inside:

• Water heaters
• Heating elements
• Pipes
• Appliances

Over time, this can:
• Reduce efficiency
• Increase electric or gas usage
• Shorten the life of your heater
• Lead to premature failure

This is also a very educational video explaining how water heaters work, how buildup forms, and how proper flushing and treatment help protect your home.

Not every heater will look like this — especially if it’s maintained and flushed regularly.

No fear — just facts.

If you’re not sure what your hardness level is, I’m happy to test it and explain what your options are.

Most homeowners don’t think about their water… until something breaks.

A noisy water heater.
White buildup on fixtures.
Dishwasher not cleaning like it used to.
Dry skin that won’t go away.

Hard water damage doesn’t happen overnight — it builds slowly over years inside your plumbing and appliances.

The crazy part? You usually can’t see it happening.

That’s why proper testing and correct system sizing matter. Not every home needs the same setup.

If you’ve never had your water tested — or haven’t checked your system in a few years — it might be worth knowing your numbers.

I test hardness, iron, chlorine, sulfur, and TDS right on site.

Just real data.

Your fridge filter isn’t doing what you think it is. 💧
TDS = Total Dissolved Solids (minerals, chemicals, contaminants in your water)
I’ve tested homes in Southington and CT with 350-400 TDS straight from the tap.
People run it through their fridge filter thinking they’re good.
I test it again: still 325-375 TDS.
Your fridge filter only removes 25-50 TDS - barely making a dent.
Ideal drinking water? 0-50 TDS.
If you’re not testing, you don’t know what you’re drinking.
Want to know what’s actually in your water? PM me. I test on-site - you watch the whole thing.

💧 Southington Homeowners — Quick Thought

You spend all this money on a beautiful home…

Roof. Kitchen. Appliances. Insurance.

But what about the water running through it every single day?

Hard water slowly builds up inside pipes, water heaters, dishwashers — even if you don’t see it right away. It can shorten the life of the things you paid good money for.

And when it comes to drinking water, most people are starting to care more about what’s actually coming out of the tap — taste, chlorine, overall quality.

It’s not about “luxury.”
It’s about protecting your home and your investment.

A lot of homes around here deal with mineral-heavy water. Most people don’t think about it until something fails.

If you’ve ever wondered whether your water is affecting your house more than you realize, feel free to ask.

🥶 Cold Weather Reminder: Water Softeners & Drain Lines

With cold temperatures coming this weekend, here’s a quick reminder for anyone with a water softener that has a drain line running outside.

⚠️ Why it matters:
During regeneration, water softeners discharge water through the drain line. If that line freezes or becomes blocked, it can cause the system to back up or malfunction.

✅ Simple steps to help prevent freezing issues:

• Make sure the drain line is clear and not frozen
• If possible, insulate exposed drain lines
• Avoid running regeneration during extreme cold if your system allows scheduling
• If the drain line exits outdoors, confirm it’s not buried in snow or ice

🔧 Extra protection in very cold weather:

In some setups, foam pipe insulation or properly installed heat tape can help reduce the risk of freezing. Heat tape should always be installed per manufacturer instructions and used safely.

A few preventative checks now can help avoid problems during freezing temperatures.

If anyone has questions or wants advice specific to their setup, feel free to comment or message me — happy to help.

Stay warm and safe this weekend! ❄️
