Chicken Adoring Friends ππ£γ°
With Our local tractor supply currently still holding chicks, many people are exploring what it means to be a proud flock owner ππ I so strongly encourage this, as it is a fruitful hobby. As much as it is a hobby it is also a daily task. Easy as it is in the beginning, from now on there are animals that need clean water and food, heat source and cleanliness in their home and diet. I thought it may be a helpful post if I touch on a few Basic Chicken owning standards.
π£BABY CHICKSπ£
Oh mylanta, who doesn't love a baby chick?! Cute and fluffy! Ya know who REALLY loves a baby chick? Your domestic house cat quite typically. Make sure you have a safe area for your babies. The happier, the healthier !
πΏFood Water And Additives:
πΈI do suggest picking up probiotics and electrolytes, they come in pre-measured packets you can find at your tractor supply store . These help give the chickens a healthy start you simply add a packet of each to a gallon of clean freshwater and serve daily. Easy peasy. ( If you find yourself with a pasty butt chicken this will work wonders on their digestive track, we will get to pasty butt chickens in a minute) π
-Medicated food:
You will want to get a bag of chick starter food. It is complete with essential amino acids for muscle development and it is uniform crumble to encourage early consumption.
πΏHeat & Shelter:
- HEAT LAMPS ARE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS π₯. But totally necessary for your baby chicks. They need to begin around 90 degrees and lower as they grow. You will notice when they begin to completely avoid standing under the light, the temperature may be too hot and you may need to raise the lamp or lower your chickens box.
-Shelter:
make sure that your chickens have a nice open clean space. Shavings straw or hay is fine for their bedding, you want something comfortable for them to move and nest around in. You will need to scrape the shavings out of your chicken shelter and change them as needed.
πΏPasty Buttsππ³
-uhm chicks can be gross. ALWAYS WASH YOUR HANDS AFTER HANDLING.
-sometimes a little chickie might have a digestive issue going on and you will notice lots of chicken p**p stuck to their butt...this is called a pasty butt.
-what do you do about a pasty butt chicken?
NOTHING. Yup. Except make sure they get that probiotic waterβΌοΈπ¦
Some people will say clean it manually, help them along. A wise, experienced farmer once taught me that if your chicken can't p**p on it's own, it's not healthy, let it go.. Oh yeah welcome to the emotional side of chicken raising!
β¨ I hope you find these tips helpfulβοΈ I will do a continued post later on the standards for adult chickens β¨
