Best Pig Breeds for Fast Growth (What I’ve Seen Work)

When it comes to pig farming, one thing many farmers want is fast growth.

Everyone wants pigs that can convert feed efficiently, add weight quickly, and reach market size in good time.

But here’s something I’ve learned from experience, not all pigs are built the same.

You can feed two different pigs the same way, and still get completely different results.

That difference often comes down to breed and genetics.

Over time, I’ve seen that some breeds consistently perform better when it comes to growth and feed conversion.

Breeds like Large White are widely used because they grow fast, adapt well, and perform reliably under different management systems. They are one of the most common choices for farmers who want steady growth.

Landrace is another strong performer. Aside from good growth, they are also excellent for breeding, known for good mothering ability and larger litter sizes. This makes them valuable for farmers looking to build and expand their herd.

Duroc is also well known for fast growth and good feed efficiency. They tend to convert feed into weight effectively and are often used in crossbreeding to improve overall performance.

Then there’s TN70, which many farmers here are familiar with. It combines good growth performance with strong reproductive ability, making it a solid option for both production and breeding.

What I’ve noticed is that these breeds tend to perform even better when they are properly managed and, in some cases, crossbred to combine their strengths.

But it’s important to understand that choosing the right breed is just the starting point.

Even the best breed will not perform well under poor management. And average breeds can still give good results when managed properly.

So while breed matters, it works hand in hand with proper feeding, consistent routine, good health management, and overall farm conditions.

Another thing to watch out for is where you’re sourcing your pigs from.

Two pigs may be called the same breed, but their performance can be very different depending on their genetics and how they were raised. That’s why it’s important to get your stock from a reliable source.

At the end of the day, fast growth is not just about feeding more, it’s about working with pigs that are built to grow.

Because when you combine good genetics with proper management, you don’t struggle as much to see results.

👉 What breed are you raising on your farm, and how has their growth been so far? Let me know in the comments!

Deadline for hog orders is 3/1. No need to pay up front, pay on pickup of processed pork in November. 1 hog remaining for sure. Let us know if you are interested.

Thanks!

Broiler chickens are also up for requests. Looking at April time frame to start them. Some people like different sized birds, I prefer a chicken in the 7 pound range as I feel its the most flavorful and doesnt take all day to cook. $15 a bird, processed and ready for your freezer. You will not find a better meat chicken than what I offer. Fed clean grains, butchered by the Amish, wrapped by us. This will run from April to August. So if you need some good yard bird for the freezer, reach out with a qty request and we'll fill those orders as the birds become available. Typically 6-8 week turn around on the meat chickens.

Just a reminder, holidays are over, frigid cold is here. 4 pigs will be picked up in 2 months to raise into butcher hogs. Had extremely positive feedback on the quality of pork from the pigs I got in Minnesota. Slated to get 4 in March with a rough butcher date of Thanksgiving. Hoping to get a little bigger size on them this year. The hogs have been dressing out at 80-90 pounds per half. My goal is 100 pounds a half for 2026. 1st come, 1st serve. $2 a pound plus buyer pays processing. Feeder pigs are started off on pasture, then get grain around 4-5 months until butcher date. My theory and my theory alone is that I started on pasture to keep a lean hog and when they are finished, they have a flavorful strip of fat that either you can cut off or cook with it on. The pigs end up getting garden vegetables as we get into the fall months.

Like I said, FCFS. If I need to add a couple head, now is the time to say something as I make 1 trip to MN to get hogs and they take 6-8 months to finish so I do one batch per year.

The rowdy 4 before getting loaded to get processed down the road at Craigs Meats. Started on pasture and finished with grain. If my mind didnt fail me, equivalent to what we raised for Craigs Meats back in the 80s and 90s. Might be a step up as if I recall correctly, they were started on bulk grain from piglets to butcher hogs. Hammering down a solution for a healthier pork option. Its a work in progress!

4 more of the exact style pigs and possibly of a couple IPP pigs for this time next year. Get yourself on the list, when they are all spoken for, im out.

Looking out to 2027 and if all the cards fall in place correctly, might skip a year as we are planning a family trip at the time they need to be monitored more closesly so we may skip 2027 with the pork option.

2026 and 2027 we still plan on doing some broilers. The sooner you let us know, the better as we'll just go off a list with quanity wanted. Typically we start off in April with Broilers and will run up till September if need be.

Thanks and have a safe and fun 9 deer dun hunt. Good luck hunters!

Just reaching out before the holidays. Looking into 2026, if you want broilers or 1/2 or whole hog. Nows the time to let me know of any interest. I have 4 feeder pigs reserved for late winter/early spring. Theyll be ready for butcher around this time next year. Pasture started and grain finished. 1/2 hog = give or take 100 pounds of meat. Craigs Meats does that butchering.

Also looking to start planning on how many meat birds to get next spring. If you like moist meat on your chicken, these birds are for you. No shots and not packed with a water sal solution that you get at the store..

Any questions, ask.

Thanks!
